Albany -- The leading Democratic candidates have focused efforts elsewhere as Super Tuesday approaches

By ELIZABETH BENJAMIN, Capitol bureau
First published: Sunday, February 29, 2004

After all the worrying New York political junkies did about whether the Democratic presidential nomination contest would last long enough for their votes to matter, the race here has failed to generate much action.

~snip~

Wanting to waste neither time nor money, Kerry and Edwards have focused most of their efforts in New York south of Westchester County, since 70 percent of the primary vote usually comes from New York City and its suburbs.

Both made brief forays upstate. Edwards focused a bit more on upstate, saying his message of bringing back jobs will resonate in the region. Both are also running TV advertisements in major upstate media markets, which are a lot cheaper than downstate.

"What you're witnessing is unity, and it's breaking out in this party across the country," Mehiel said. "Even if this contest continues beyond Tuesday, it's a good thing. It's bringing out Democrats in record numbers. And if it's over at that point, we get together and that's good, too. There's no downside."
