It is brutal, cheap thrills and a game for alot of them. The two responses to these assuallts on our reason is to either try and schout them down or ignore them.

But they are so asinine, so blinded by their mostly contrived rage, that they do not get the hint.

I come to DU for lively debates not shouting matches.

Thank God this is not the real world.

1. Those people are in the real world too
Trust me, I deal with some all the time. I have some in the family as well.

3. How do you think the Mods feel?
It's even less fun for them than it is for us, primarily because they're overwhelmingly out-numbered.

I've never in my DU experience used the "ignore" or "hide thread" features for more than the two or three minutes it took for me to cool down, but the time for it may be approaching as the infiltration heightens.

5. I used my ignore yesterday for the first time.
There was a particularly annoying poster that seemed to be everywhere so I put him/her on ignore for a few hours. I was then able to enjoy reading other posts without reading moronic hateful comments.

7. I absolutely understand.
Having a Republican sister has helped me hone my onboard "ignore" skills to near instinct, but this primary season may challenge me. ;)

12. I was told I was put on igonre
because I asked what their candidate is doing to block Telco immunity.

No name calling or anything.

There are worse things than being ignored.

17. I know. Much worse.
It just speaks to the hyersensitivity of certain candidates' supporters thinking that asking for specifics on their planned Senate votes to protect our civil rights is worthy of a DU style "fuck you"

And, I never did find out how that Senator plans to vote.

Thanks for the  :-) MKJ

6. I'm wondering if there's a limit...
to the number of Ignores I can have. Most of them don't have profiles, so I can't tell if they've been tomb-stoned yet. They account for the most offensive remarks I have seen, including those posted by Freeper sites. Hard to wade through the garbage.

9. I don't think there's a limit.
But that's a very good question for the Admins. They're pretty quick to reply to questions of that nature, in my experience. :hi:

22. Once someone is tombstoned, their profile is turned on to reveal that fact.
No need to wonder. :-)

14. I agree. I've held as a point of (guilty) pride
"...but the time for it may be approaching as the infiltration heightens."

I agree. I've held as a point of (guilty) pride that I had never even come close to using the ignore function. But this season's primaries seem to be much uglier on DU than the 2004 primaries (excepting of course the Nader threads... man, those were brutal).

But I have been tempted to use the ignore this go around, if for nothing else than to separate the chaff from the wheat of analytical discussion so to speak.

If that isn't a "tagger" I don't know what is.

19. It IS (part of) the real world and the swarms of trolls are continuous with ...
the many (what I call) "Red-Headed League" type progressives that so abound in key progressive venues, from Berkeley CA politics (along with authentic progressives), or WBAI, or the newly reborn sds/mds (since MLK Day 2006, working to build the ANTI-IMPERIALIST movement this society and world DESPERATELY need).

http://studentsforademocraticsociety.org/

Authentic progressives, from those more mainstream to those more radical/socialist/etc. need to be cognizant of and have ways of systematically addressing these swarms. They exist, they are real, and they exist in reality (including that portion of reality that is in cyberspace) in HUGE numbers for REAL LIFE REAL WORLD reasons.

To understand my use of the term "red headed league" (the more commonly used term is 'creep') you might check out Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes story "The Red Headed League" and read it closely and deeply.
