Darryl Lowe was 10 years old when he stood in a long line with his parents at Spelman College in Atlanta in 1968 to view the body of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the assassinated civil rights leader.

Lowe didn't understand the importance of King's life then, but he does now.

Douglas County District Judge Darryl Lowe says the United States must do more to achieve the goals of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Lowe spoke at a program honoring the late civil rights leader Thursday at the City-County Building in Omaha.

America could do better in achieving the goals of King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech, said the Douglas County District Court judge, the speaker at a Thursday program celebrating the late civil rights leader.

"Dr. King would be proud, but he would not be satisfied," Lowe said.

The program at the City-County Building was a joint effort of the City of Omaha's Human Rights and Relations and Human Resources Departments and the Douglas County Human Resources Department. Woodmen of the World and the Omaha Public Library were co-sponsors.

Mark LeFlore Sr., an employee with the Douglas County Human Resources Department, said the event is held to make sure King's message stays in the forefront.
