Dean and DNC members help paint school in Denver today.
I love the community efforts they do. Can you just imagine this bunch of Republicans in power doing stuff like this? Great idea.

Dems practice their strokes at Manual High School

DENVER – Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean and members of the Democratic National Convention Committee picked up paintbrushes to help refurbish a classroom at a local school Thursday.

The paint and plaster job at Manual High School was part of a Volunteers of America project to renovate the building and to keep the community interested in the school.

Manual was closed for a year due to declining enrollment and low student performance, but faculty, alumni and community organizers were able to get it re-opened.

"This is a very gutsy, risky thing to do," said Dean about the re-opening of the school. "This could be a model for the rest of the country, if it works. That's the challenge for the principal and school board, making it work."

Here is more about the Manual High School from a DNC notice.

Democratic National Convention Committee doing community service

DENVER - Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Howard Dean, along with members of the DNC's Executive Committee, will join Convention CEO Leah D. Daughtry and the staff of the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) for a service project at 3:00 p.m. on THURSDAY, January 10, 2008. In a project coordinated by the Colorado branch of Volunteers of America, Dean and the DNCC team will paint and plaster a room in need of repair at Manual High School and partner with students for a crafts project in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.As one of Denver's oldest schools, Manual first opened its doors in the 1890s. After a recent closure due to declining enrollment and low student performance, Manual re-opened its doors this past fall with a goal of emerging as one of Denver's premier high schools.

Good for them.

2. You are welcome.
It just seemed like a nice thing to do. Part of the convention committee is actually staying in Denver now, I think...or will soon.

7. Thanks for the picture, Mad!
I didn't see him on TV after Iowa, but there were some posts
that indicated that he didn't look well.

That he looked REALLY bad.

Then there was an ominous post that there were rumours in
D.C. about his health.

He looks great in that pic.

Have you heard anything about his health?

9. He looked great at the NH dinner when he spoke, very good, good speech.
Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 11:18 PM by madfloridian
It was Jan. 4, I think. If you find the whole dinner in the video archives, his speech is about an hour in.

I did not see him the night you mention, but everytime he gives interviews from the DNC headquarter, which apparently he did that night you mention....the make up and camera work is not good. Don't know whose fault it is. But someone needs to work on it. There was one night that Hardball used some kind of weird lens when he was speaking from HQ, I remember cause someone figured out what type. It was awful and distorted his head. I blame the DNC staff for letting that happen, because once the interview starts, it is out of his control.

As I say he was having a great time at the NH dinner and looked good.

11. Someone from VT posted at the HEP blog...
that they had it from good sources that he said he was working out and eating when he wanted to eat.

I wish I had seen that night, I hear he did look bad.

12. The stamina it takes
to do what Dean is doing requires "working out" and eating well when you can because there's so many times you just can't!

13. OK found the link to the NH dinner video at C-Span
http://www.c-spanarchives.org/library/cache/ASX_203272-1-0-0.asx

I don't care for their new archival system, but here are the directions from the link.

"Untrimmed Video Warning
Due to the structure of our archival systems, the streaming video for this program may come from more than one video file. As the archival video is processed, we trim the multiple files and concatenate into one file. Once this is complete, this message will not display. In order to make as much video viewable as soon as possible, we are making these unprocessed files available now.

Once your streaming video player reaches the end of a file, it will immediately start the next one. You may also advance to the next video section using the Next Track button of your player.

To see the playlist:
In RealPlayer 10 select the View menu then Now Playing.
In Windows Media Player 11, from the menu bar at the top, left-click the arrow below Now Playing to bring up the Now Playing menu, then select Show List Pane. "

In WMP I need to open it, then click fast forward once. Dean's speech starts about 21 minutes in. He looked fine.

15. OK, watched it.
He LOOKS good, but it looked like he was limping
a bit as he walked away.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it...

(I hope).

He was inspirational AS USUAL.

Thanks!

14. One kid asked "is he running for mayor or something?"
http://www.myfoxcolorado.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=5452765&version=1&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=3.2.1

"DNC Chair Howard Dean picked up a paint brush as part of the effort to improve the community that is hosting the Democratic National Convention.

"We want to know this community, and we want to contribute to the community, not just leaving our money here, but leaving behind a mark that's going to last a while," Dean said.

Students enjoyed the help, but Dean's celebrity seemed lost on a few. "Is he running for mayor or something like that," said Michael Simmons.

But the celebrity wasn't lost on Denver's Superintendent. " To see this kind of national attention here is a big deal," Michael Bennet said."

21. Thanks, I thought it would show how all of our Dems make a difference.
We are all just about being angry at each other here lately. It seemed a nice subject. There are not many safe subjects here lately.

Thanks. :-)
