Poll question: Which Democratic Nominee Who Lost Would Have Made The Best President?
Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 07:53 PM by Magic Rat
Of all the men we've nominated for president since 1952, who would have made the best president?

1. Poll's messed up
A vote for Gore reads as a vote for Dukakis, and a vote for Kerry is a vote for Gore.

3. And a vote for Anderson is a vote for Reagan.
Oops. Sorry, had a flashback there.

7. McGovern
He was/is a honest, articulate, thoughtful, decent man. How many times in our entire history have we had that? If McGovern is elected so much of our history is different. Nixon is not pardoned and goes to jail. No President Ford. No Ford, no Carter. No Carter, no Raygun. That's just for starters.

8. I was torn between Gore and McGovern...
...with my logical sense saying Gore, and my heart saying McGovern.

What decided it for me was the realization that, had McGovern won, he would have been working with a solidly-Democratic Congress (many of whom were friends of his from the Senate) that originated in a more progressive era. He would have had little trouble getting his proposals passed, whereas Gore would have been facing the Delay-Hastert-Lott-McConnell band of Republicans who would be out to sabotage him as much as possible. So, in the end, I had to go with George over Al.
