Hillary vs. Huckabee? Huckabee wins
A Hillary vs. Huckabee matchup has me extremely worried. Why? The numbers of people voting along party lines in the Presidential elections are faily evenly split. The true deciders of the elections (at least for the last few cycles) have been the independents or the crossovers from one party to the other. I really feel that if it's a match between Hillary and Huckabee, Huckabee will come out the winner. Here's how I see it:

Hillary won't get any (or very few) Republican crossover votes, since the right wing has been doing their best since 1992 to disparage her. I have been witness to countless people who bad-mouth her at every turn. She might even lose some Democratic voters who are more centrist or conservative. She could gain the independent vote, but I don't think that's a given.

Huckabee, on the other hand, may very well steal a lot of the Democratic voters. I know there are evangelical Christian Democrats out there who just might let their religion trump every other reason for voting for a candidate - which would make them go for Huckabee. As far as the independents go, depending on their religious persuasion, they could go for him, too. Never discount the power of "voting for one of us" (witness people voting for GWB because they'd "like to have a beer with him"), and that motivation is very strong in the religious world.

I hope I'm wrong, but the feeling I used to have that the Presidential election was going to be a slam-dunk for the Democrats has started to fade....

15. Obama could. Edwards could.
Not Hillary.

After she's lost the conservative Xtians AND the green-leaning independents, not to mention a few leftist Dems, she can't make up the difference.

Any Dem going in has 30% of the population who will never vote for them under any circumstances. Hillary has 45%.

Do the math.

1. Not a chance
Huckabee has more hidden baggage than American airlines. He's an extremist in sheep's clothing.

he might get evangelical and more conservative Dems in middle America, but moderate Republicans on both coasts would bolt and go for Clinton. They don't take to kind to religion on the sleeve. Bush was able to come across moderate due to his father and family name. Huckabee is just too out there.

7. Without a doubt. That is a scary matchup.
There's a lot of Dems/left-leaning indies who think that Huckabee makes sense. He's more fiscally friendly to the middle class than most Republicans AND he's got the religion thing.

Hillary couldn't beat him.

14. I totally agree
Huckabee is a very smooth talker who can connect the way Bill Clinton did (does). Clinton himself warned folks not underestimate Huckabee.

All those years as a Baptist minister honed his speaking, emoting skills and he's damn good.

I currently don't have a candidate but I went to a Hillary function this evening where Vernon Jordan's wife Ann, Phil Lader and Don Fowler spoke to a large group of women about Hillary. After the formal session, small group discussion turned to possible HRC opponents in the GE and believe me, the heavy hitters as well as the assembled women (some of them movers and shakers here in SC) do not minimize the threat posed by either Huckabee or McCain!

17. I know Repubs and you're right
They hate Clintons, especially Hillary. There is no more polariziing person the Dems could pick as their candidate. She's disliked more than we dislike Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Rove and name whatever other demon you despise.

19. Like Ghouliani, this love affair with Huck will blow over
Now that he's a contender, they'll actually start scrutinizing his record and what he's been saying and doing his whole career. And it ain't pretty.
