Obama Surrogate on Hardball: Hillary has "Democrats disease"
Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 05:17 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
NH Congressman Paul Hodes (sp?) supporting Obama discussing Clinton:

She has what I like to call "Democrats disease." She has a list of issues and of forces to fight against.

(context: offered as a contrast with Obama offering people hope.)

I have yet to see the Republicans reciprocate all this "togetherness"crap and I don't like to see Democrats mocking democratic ideals.

18. I didn't see it because I don't watch Matthews
unless it's absolutely necessary, but I think (without seeing it) that what he means is that Sen Clinton provides a laundry list rather than a narrative, a set of issues instead of a vision. I think that is actually a fair criticism, because what I think makes Edwards and Sen Obama so compelling--and what made Pres Clinton's speeches away from the State of the Union so compelling--is that they offer a narrative. So, for example, Pres Clinton spoke about a bridge to the 21st century, Edwards speaks about two Americas, and Sen Obama talks about hope. They are all vision narratives less than policy statements.

Is it a "Democrat's disease"? Perhaps. Republicans for the past 25 years have been more successful speaking about what Bush 41 called "the vision thing" better than Democrats (other than Pres Clinton) do (see Reagan, "Morning in America"; Gingrich, "Contract with America").

I haven't decided yet who I am supporting in the primary since my candidate dropped out after Iowa...but what do you think Hodes said that was so awful? He was simply pointing out that Obama represents something new and fresh. Perhaps reframing the fight a bit?

50. He did not say "being a Democrat is a disease,"
Edited on Fri Jan-11-08 02:03 AM by 48percenter
perhaps you need to adjust the volume on your hearing aid. He said "Democrat's disease, that in my mind is something altogether different. I think what he was referring to was the endless promises the Democrats make, and then come through on very little. A la ending the war in Iraq. Impeaching the liars, etc. Overreaching, overpromising for years.

Ring a little bell? :eyes:

28. The thing is, the Obama campaign is essentially a critique of the Democratic party
It plays on our dissatisfaction with feckless Democratic leadership in congress, which is fair enough.

But some of us wonder whether, in a nation taken over by a neo-fascist movement, whether the Democratic party is really the biggest problem.

32. All the Hilary Haters should be happy . The Campaign is
on to get rid of HRC. Bloomberg will run if we have HRC and Huckabee
as candidates. This is what is behind MSNBCs relentless attacks on
Hilary.

Obama is favored by the Doren Group. Get rid of Hilary or we put Bloomberg
in. Just watch and listen.

The first attempt flopped with Media getting egg on their face when
HRC won NH.

48. snark does not trump facts
It was a debate segment between two congressman, one speaking in favor of Obama, one speaking in favor of Clinton.

It was presented as two men speaking in advocacy of the two candidates they support.

If the Clinton guy had said some unfortunate thing in the same segment, he would have been identified by me, and by anyone else, as a Clinton surrogate.
