All of our candidates are Baby Boomers, "the generation born between 1946 and 1964 ... ." http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/releases/archives/facts_for_features_special_editions/006105.html

Unless someone emerges at a blocked convention, it looks as though we're going to nominate at least one more Baby Boomer.

So, for what's worth, the torch won't be passed this election cycle.

Truth seems to be held in low esteem these days, but how silly to lie about what is at most a purely symbolic event.

46. Obama is also a Gen-Xer
Some cultural scholar people say it starts in 1960 or 61. I've seen others saying it starts as late as 1966. There are people who were born in 45 or 44 or 43 who still call themselves boomers, and they are. What do they have in common with the Greatest Generation, even though they were born before 1946? Nothing. They're boomers too. Obama has nothing in common with boomers. His mother was born in 43, just a few years before Bill and Hillary. His grandparents are the age of Bill and Hill's parents. Therefore, he is one generation behind them, making him an X-er.

42. You are too concerned with a category
Obama is a good 15 years younger than Kerry, but both are good men, and good liberal Democrats. Why are you so concerned with the "Baby Boomer" tag? It spans an entire generation and would include those from the ages of 43-62. Who is out there that is younger than 43 or older than 62 that you would like as our candidate this cycle? Obama has already been flogged for being "too young and inexperienced", and a guy like the 71 year old McCain has been tagged with being "too old". I don't get the angst here.

Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 04:13 PM by Benhurst
It's Obama's people who are pushing the torch's being passed bullshit.

If it were true, it would be little more than an historical footnote.

Since it isn't true, it's just silly bullshit and spin. Why lie about something so trivial? It's too bad Obama's supporters can't accept him for the baby boomer he is. I guess "youthful baby boomer" doesn't play from their perspective as well as "new generation." How pathetic.

66. Yes, by the spin-masters who are selling our candidates like soap.
And by the failure of our candidates to address the problems facing this nation which is in trouble, opting instead for feel-good pablum and downright avoidance of what lies ahead.

Things you haven't heard about and aren't likely to in this campaign:
The shredding of the Constitution and Bill of Rights
The citizens loss of privacy.
The military/industrial complex's eating up 51% of the discretionary budget, not even counting the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.
The decline of the Dollar. etc., etc., etc.

Some of Senator Obama's supporters have taken to comparing him to Lincoln.
Well he's no Lincoln. But that certainly shouldn't worry him, since there's no danger whatsoever of his having to face an opponent even remotely similar to him or even, for that matter, a Stephen A. Douglas.

33. I suspect a little wistfulness that it isn't the other way around...
but given the realities of today, I think Kerry is very happy his endorsement was sought after (it was, by many camps), and very happy to be giving it to someone that he can support as enthusiastically as he can support Obama.

It has to be a little tough for him, though. I think that might be what is showing through in these pictures.

Who would seriously want the endorsement of the man that lost to Bush in re-election. Sorry but Kerry for screwed up big time in 2004.

Besides from my cousin who live in SC, the family all sort of said, Kerry publically endorsed Obama and they laughed. I'm not sure Obama should want it. Doesnt seem Kerry is too popular down there.

for his sorry capitulation in 2004. Ohio was rigged and with the vote recounted there, Kerry had a win in his pocket. But he conceded defeat and went to sleep for 3 years.

I hope all of the angry Kerry supporters, such as myself, realize that Kerry's support for "O" is the kiss of death for his campaign.

25. For your edification, from Douglas Brinkley, historian--on John Kerry, Clintons, McAuliffe's DNC
Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 01:51 PM by flpoljunkie
I think it's a very decisive election, because in truth Kerry is more liberal than Al Gore, and I think that there's a progressive agenda to John Kerry versus a very conservative agenda with Bush." - Douglas Brinkley

Whom does the biographer think his subject will pick as a running mate? Not Hillary Rodham Clinton. Audio Link: http://www.depauw.edu/av/crain/brinkley-hillary.mp3

"There's really two different Democratic parties right now: there's the Clintons and Terry McAuliffe and the DNC and then there's the Kerry upstarts. John Kerry had one of the great advantages in life by being considered to get the nomination in December. He watched every Democrat in the country flee from him, and the Clintons really stick the knife in his back a bunch of times, so he's able to really see who was loyal to him and who wasn't. That's a very useful thing in life."

Statement on Rev. McClurkin

"I have clearly stated my belief that gays and lesbians are our brothers and sisters and should be provided the respect, dignity, and rights of all other citizens. I have consistently spoken directly to African-American religious leaders about the need to overcome the homophobia that persists in some parts of our community so that we can confront issues like HIV/AIDS and broaden the reach of equal rights in this country.

I strongly believe that African Americans and the LGBT community must stand together in the fight for equal rights. And so I strongly disagree with Reverend McClurkin's views and will continue to fight for these rights as President of the United States to ensure that America is a country that spreads tolerance instead of division."

Do you have to post this rancor in every positive Obama thread? I mean... what does your "humor" accomplish other than pit... supporter versus supporter? It’s really the Obama supporters doing all this hate. It does us no good to make joke about a how a does 400 hundred dollar haircut help the poor?

If you were really interested in changing the homophobic artifact… you might consider trying to convince people with claims, data, reasons, evidence, warrants, etc. What we can do is talk about which candidate is the most inclusive and has the best platfrom for GLBT issues.

Your approach only makes it worse.

Irony:
A literary style employing such contrasts for humorous or rhetorical effect.

So it is clear that i was not saying Donnie Mcclurkin comentary was funny or humorous. Keep the deridable discourse alive and well it will really accomplish something positive for the GLBT cause!!!

62. if he was ...
why would it matter? Hopefully, we will see all the Anti-Obama Donnie McClurkin posters come here and talk about how ridiculous that comment is. Doubtful! He is clearly saying something...

73. I just found this one from yesterday in Charleston, S.C.
The little boy looking up at Obama is poignant, as well as the awe and seeming shyness of the older boys.

Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., right shakes the hands of several youths during a rally on the College of Charleston campus in Charleston, S.C., Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008. Obama's campaign is counting on blacks who traditionally make up half of the Democratic primary voters here to deliver the state to him on Jan. 26, a victory that he hopes will help fuel momentum going into the 'Mega Tuesday' voting in 22 states 10 days later.
