But this place is going fucking nuts lately. I mean, seriously. The pontifications of Karl Rove? Here?

We've got people saying "Oh, Obama isn't really black" and "The racists will never let us elect a black man."

We've got people saying "Hillary's a heartless monster," and "she's playing the victim card."


But, in all justice, I should mention that it's not just here. The ability some people have for holding totally opposing thoughts in their heads at the same time is hardly remarkable on the outside world either. I had some guy tell me yesterday what he thought the premise of my novels was all about, and how it "tied my hands" with regards to further plotlines, all without reading anything but a 300 word promo piece posted to an e-mail group. The arrogance was stunning.

Now we've got people who want to insist we start using IMHO more regularly. I'm not sure why it should even be necessary, but I'll bite.

Let me let folks in on a little secret. THIS IS ALL MY FUCKING OPINION. I happen to think rather highly of it, but that doesn't mean anyone else has to. It's an honor that some people do. But it's STILL simply my opinion.

I'm beyond asking folks to try to be a little more civil to one another. That's a lost cause. But maybe, just maybe, people can stop and think before posting something that sounds COMPLETELY ignorant? Can we can the subtle and not so subtle sexism and racism? Can we talk about issues and the presentation of the issues and not cosmetic bullshit like a bunch of freepers?

Civility might be out of reach. But should logic and proportion? Areour perspectives so skewed that we toss out the most ridiculous statements without bothering to check with our brains first?

Sheesh, folks. Another long-time DUer left today because of some of this. I nearly stormed out the other night because of the racist drivel someone was spouting and my almost irresistable urge to seriously fire him up.

Can we possibly THINK before we post a little more often? Can we stop and ask ourselves, "am I going to sound like a fucking moran if I post this?" Or "Am I really being as clever here as I think I am?"

This has gone far beyond simply arguing, or even taking potshots at one another. It's become the political equivilant of monkeys throwing poo. And DU is not only getting splattered up pretty good, but it's starting to smell funny.

If we can't be civil, can we at least try to be smart?

Or is that asking too much?
