South Carolina will be like an open wound to the democratic party
I think you will see a massive racial gap. Most likely white supporters will support Hillary in margins greater than 70%, and black supporters supporting Barack in similar margins. It'll be very tight.

9. What makes you think they won't?
Why should the whites vote for Obama, when the blacks won't vote for Hillary?? Sounds like double standard bullshit to me.

I wonder if Hillary will be screaming racism after Obama beats her there??

19. Come On Now - If Obama Wasn't A Factor All Those Black Votes Would Go To....
Hillary. Remember - Bill Clinton was really our first black president. Hillary can't scream racism because if she did she would never get the black vote if perchance she ultimately did become our nominee.

Although there are those out there that might say she might scream racism because she's already used the gender card and the fear card.

24. There are many black pro-Hillary South Carolinians
I'm not one but my ex is and others I've debated with. Not sure what the concensus is recently but, I over heard several anti-Hillary conversations at the John Edwards rally I just returned from. My daughter and I were amongst the handful of non-whites there. FYI.

4. Will we ever broach the subject that some blacks might vote for Obama just because he is black?
I'm black and have always been a supporter of Biden and Clinton.

Identity politics are a major factor for some, big surprise. Why do the 'experts' always point out that Southern Governors seem to be the Dems best hopes?

5. the longer it goes on, the deeper the wounds will go
you'll see the age gap come into play - those over and under 40.
you'll see the gender gap come into play - men and women.
you'll see the racial gap come into play - whites and minorities.
you'll see the education gap come into play - college grads vs. high school grads.
you'll see the income gap come into play - those over $50,000 vs. those under.

I think you'll see the party exposed in ways it hasn't been exposed before.

of voters like I do blacks. I'm in NC, which is very much like SC and the whites seem to be more for Edwards & Obama. I only know 2 that say Hillary is their first choice and that is because they want Bill back in the WH. I say we can't go backwards. Ever.

14. Here's an interesting tidbit from a yahoo news story
that appears to belie your prediction, at least in part:

http://real-us.news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080109/ts_alt_afp...

"White, college-age kids in South Carolina are flocking to work for Obama, and this was happening before he became popular," said local historian Walter Edgar, acknowledging the lingering racial divide in this former slave state where blacks account for about half of Democratic primary voters.

snip

The state's black establishment had been firmly for Clinton, but Obama's win in overwhelmingly white Iowa changed the calculus for many.

"There had been this thinking that Obama was not electable. What that translates to is white people would not support him," said Bruce Ransom, an authority on South Carolina's black electorate at Clemson University.

18. I must say
as a native and current South Carolinian I'm a little offended by the idea that you would insinuate that white DEMOCRATS here are racist and could never go for a black candidate. I started this race as an Edwards supporter, but I now believe we're down to a 2 person race and given these 2 choices I'll go for Obama over that triangulating human windsock any day. I realize we have quite a number of racists here, but most of them will vote in the republican primary if they vote at all. Also, having lived in a number of other places, I don't find the people who call themselves democrats here to be very different from anywhere else. They run from moderate to very progressive.

Maybe you still view us as a place where the whites sit on the front porch drinking sweet tea talking about how we're going to keep the "coloreds" in their place, but it's not that way here for the 40% of us or so that consistently vote for the candidate with a "D" by their name.

20. It is indeed shaping up to be a tragic event
And to no purpose.

If I was Hillary I would skip SC. Seriously.

It's lose-lose for the party and perhaps for her personally.

26. i think she campaign great there. Just do whatever she would do...
regularly. which is campaign in all the areas, including black dominated areas talking about how her plans will help their community. that goes for black and white. she can lose by a little, i think many black people would vote for her as long as she does honest campaigning there. and then when she loses she doesn't have to whine "oh, it's cuz he's black", it might be understood already and everyone's cool! : )
