1. also
"It has only about one-quarter as many members as the powerful Culinary Workers Union, so it is not nearly as significant. But curiously, the choice came down to Edwards and Obama. ... Clinton was not in the picture".

6. I believe that the Nevada SEIU are putting that endorsement on hold
In the light of Senator Clinton's win in New Hampshire, this is what I've heard.

The Nevada SEIU are apparently going to think things over for a few days before deciding on now who to endorse.

12. I can't believe all the traction a 2% win in a tiny state gets
a candidate. If they like a candidate enough, they shouldn't worry about such a narrow defeat.

18. The SEIU and the Culinary Union's endorsements are both on hold now
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 01:51 AM by ...of J.Temperance
New Hampshire is where the REAL campaign begins, Iowa is actually irrelevant, it's more like a quirky-type thing in the Primary season.

Nevada is a more Centrist sort of state, it should therefore lean towards Senator Clinton....also in general the Union vote is leaning Senator Clinton's way, her block is mainly comprising of women, the Union vote and senior citizens.

On Edit: Dammit spelling error

22. I'm saying that they've put the cart before the horse
Senator Clinton's comeback in New Hampshire has changed the situation.

Regardless of ANYTHING, Hillary will be getting the Teamsters and their formidable GOTV machine across tons of states.

7. This isn't the Culinary's union
So it isn't as big as an endorsement from them, but Obama can use all the support he can get after a dissapointing loss in NH.

"SEIU endorses Obama
By Tony Cook · January 8th, 2008 ·

Ending a tortured process that unveiled infighting within its ranks, the Service Employees International Union Nevada tonight endorsed Sen. Barack Obama. Former Sen. John Edwards also was in the running, and Sen. Hillary Clinton was broadly dismissed.

More details in my story in the Sun Wednesday morning"

31. As I understand it ...
Nevada is a strong party machine state, and Hillary is the machine's preferred candidate. It will take a lot more than this endorsement to swing Nevada away from Hillary.

36. The full Las Vegas Sun article is out...LINK!
http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/stories/nevada/2008/jan/08/010810135.html

Excerpt:

"LAS VEGAS (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has won the endorsement of the Nevada chapter of the Service Employees International Union, union officials said.

The influential union claims to represent 17,500 health care and county workers in Nevada. Its executive board approved the decision in a conference call Tuesday night, shortly after the Illinois senator finished a close second behind Hillary Rodham Clinton in the New Hampshire primary.

SEIU President Vicky Hedderman said she believes Obama is a candidate "who could take the campaign all the way through November.""

38. About the Culinary endorsement
It's not as big a deal as the talking heads would have us think.

My daughter, who's an active member of Culinary, has the following take:

Most members won't even participate in the Caucus, either from lack of interest or competing obligations at the time it's scheduled--work schedules, babysitting problems etc.

A few members who're gung-ho union members may take the union's endorssement as a signal to vote for the endorsee. The others who're into politics will vote their choice anyway.

The main difference it will make is in whose campaign gets union donations.

I might add that I'm astounded at how many of my friends are _not_ going to caucus. Most of these fall into the category of women over 40; if this is typical will it cut into Hillary's vote?
Anyhow, I'm having to miss two other important meetings in order to attend our caucus. It's also complicating other things in our family, like a granddaughter's dance lesson and a birthday party invitation.

It's nice to be among the first states this time, but I truly wish it had taken the form of an early primary rather than a caucus arrangement. Too many people get left out with the latter. At least in a primary you have all day to get there and vote. Also, there's at least one family member who's worried about the split between her choice of candidate and her husband's. In a primary she'd have a secret ballot and it wouldn't matter--with a caucus it may risk a certain amount of domestic discord.

Thanks for listening. I just needed to ventilate <G>

39. The endorsement means GOTV
And a lot of those problems, like babysitting, disappear. That's why it would be very helpful. Hopefully they have enough of a ground organization otherwise to make up the difference.
