Poll: Kerry has lead in Georgia, but it's falling

Published on: 02/26/04

John Kerry holds a double-digit lead over John Edwards among likely voters in Tuesday's Georgia Democratic presidential primary, according to a new poll conducted for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and WSB-TV.

But Kerry appears to be losing ground fast and could well forfeit the state if the North Carolina senator follows his pattern in other primaries of coming on strong in the closing days of the campaign, analysts said.

The Massachusetts senator led Edwards 39 percent to 23 percent, according to the poll of 395 voters conducted Monday and Tuesday by Zogby International.

The Rev. Al Sharpton had 9 percent and Rep. Dennis Kucinich 1 percent. An additional 21 percent were undecided.

4. Wonder If Edwards Will Pull A Dean & Invite Himself To Carters' Residence
for a heavily publicized non-endorsement/photo op... he seems to be imitating Dean's Protectionist and "Outsider" rhetoric... and Trippi now seems to be in the act (saying Clark supporters are moving to Edwards). Maybe Edwards will start using some of Trippi's strategies.

Is Georgia an Open Primary?

5. Yes, it's an open primary.
Joe Trippi has nothing to do with the Edwards campaign.

6. Not only is it an open primary
but there is a flag issue on the ballot which will probably bring the rw out in droves.

12. Not really
The flag that right-winger confed types wanted is on the ballot. It's actually a contest between two flags that people really couldn't give a rat's butt about.

8. Just another tracking poll (1 day of 2) taken out of context
Zogby needs to go back to school (Stat 101). The error rate, with a sample of 129, would be huge. The error rate the second day would be substantially less. For the two days the spread would be (computed in my head) about 40 for Kerry, 23 for Edwards. While Edwards may be closing, one can't use each day of a two day tracking poll with substantial differences in sample sizes to draw the conclusion that Zogby made. This is the second time he's done this (during this primary season), and he was wrong the first time. One might speculate that he either has an agenda or he has gone brain dead.

He may have other info, which he is not reporting (which was edited out of the article?), but this looks really, really specious.

9. Lose a 16 point lead over the weekend?
Not likely.

Also, judging by the crowds at his town hall here on Sunday, I believe he'll win easily.

11. Let's remember who is Edwards base, shall we?

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/primaries/pages/epolls/WI/index.html

Voters who are satisfied with the Bush Administration:
52% Edwards, 23% Kerry

Voters who are enthusiastic about * Administration:
33% Edwards, 10% Kerry

Conservatives voted Edwards, pro-Iraq voted Edwards

Those who are looking to beat Bush:
28% Edwards, 59% Kerry.
