Edwards Supporters Refuse to Shake Clinton's Hand- (Nice)
January 08, 2008 10:29 AM

ABC News' Eloise Harper Reports: In a sign of just how contentious the Democratic primary in New Hampshire has become, Senator Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., suffered three slightly awkward moments this morning while stopping by polling stations to greet voters.

She was greeting supporters in Nashua, New Hampshire and got to the end of the line when she tried to greet supporters of former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., who were chanting and creaming, "The status quo has got to go! The status quo has got to go!"

Clinton extended her arm to shake a man's hand and he refused to shake the former first lady's hand. So Clinton patted him on the shoulder and moved on.

Edwards described Clinton as representing the "status quo" during the ABC News debate in New Hampshire Saturday, arguing there should be an unfiltered debate between himself and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., -- two agents of change, he said.

Later this morning, Clinton was walking along a line of supporters in Derry, New Hampshire when she crossed a woman who was holding up a Mitt Romney sign. The woman started yelling at Clinton to move her bus. "Voters can't get in because your bus is in the way." The woman was pointing at the bus and seemed flustered. Clinton told the woman they would move it.

Next, the Clinton campaign stopped in Concord, New Hampshire, where Clinton tried to meet with voters. But supporters of Rep. Ron Paul, R-tex., were screaming so loudly, "a vote for clinton is a vote for war!"And, "Pat-ri-ot act!" -- that it was tough to hear. Through all of these primary-day incidents, Clinton smiled and appeard to let it all roll off her back.

What's up with all the divisiveness and venom?

3. My staunch Edwards' voting sister is now wavering.
She now says Edwards or Hillary. My mom has switched from Kucinich to Hillary. Why? Because we aren't fooled by crap. We know what's happening here and we're not supporting it.

4. People need to deal with it.
In most countries, politics is like this. Ideology is serious business. I'd like a modicum of civility to all those other than fascists, but I'd rather have people engaged and rude than detached and polite.

8. Hillary might be luckier if she LOSES.
Does any other candidate so consistently encounter this kind of rude, insolent, loutish behavior?

I'm talking about the press, of course, but the public is pretty bad, too.

Edwards supporters, Clinton is not at fault. You don't even have to climb over her dead body to get ahead.

10. They need to be careful

This sort of stuff is going to bring out a lot of anger towards Edwards and Obama and drive a lot of people back to Hillary, if it continues.

As much as people like pulling people down, there comes a point where a lot of people are going to go enough is enough and make a point.

15. Are you kidding?
I would shake her hand in a heartbeat.. she's not my first choice - but I would certainly shake her hand, have a conversation with her.. and vote for her in the general election if she's the NOM.

Don't be insulting and lump all "Obama Supporters" into your small box.

22. funny. This thread implies all JE supporters are alike.
The OP is trying to lump all Edwards supporters into a small box. I'm for Edwards, but like you, I would shake Clinton's hand in a heartbeat, visit with her, and I'll vote for her in the GE if she's the nominee.

OPs like the one that started this thread are obvious in their intent, which is to diss Edwards and his supporters.

33. Agreed..
It seems as though half of this board has more fun dumping on other candidates then building up their own.

I like Obama.. (Edwards 2nd BTW) - but i'm trying to learn about keeping the trash to a minimum.. although i'll admit it's difficult sometimes. ;)

32. That's petty and ridiculous!!!
Goodness knows that I do not support Obama, but if I encountered him at some event I would gladly shake his hand. Why would I refuse yo shake the hand of a fellow Democrat. Heck, I would even shake Bush's hand simply out of respect for the office.

Rude and small minded people do NOT enhance their candidate, quite the contrary!!!

23. That had nothing to do with John Edwards.
That has everything to do with the voters.

I know that I wouldn't appreciate a candidate showing up at my polling place, blocking voters from getting to their poll place efficiently. The candidates have done their jobs and should back off and let the voters do thiers.

36. That's just cruel. Seriously.
I don't care if you support the candidate or not. To be downright mean and refuse to shake the lady's hand is simply venomous.

I remember this photo from 2004 with great fondness, and it really hit home for me about how you can disagree without being cruel or petty.
