Senator Biden Issues Statement on Justice Department's CIA Tape Investigation
Go get 'em, Joe!

Renews His Call For a Special Counsel to be Appointed

January 2, 2008 -- Washington, DC – The Department of Justice announced today that it would open a full criminal investigation into the destruction of CIA interrogation videotapes.

On December 9, 2007, Senator Joseph R. Biden, Jr. (D-DE) was the first to call on Attorney General Michael Mukasey to appoint a Special Counsel to investigate the CIA's destruction of the tapes. Today, Sen. Biden renewed his call for a Special Counsel and issued the following statement:

“I'm not surprised that the Justice Department's preliminarily investigation revealed facts supporting a criminal investigation. Yet the Attorney General should not have appointed a prosecutor that reports to a White House political appointee, and instead should have appointed a Special Counsel who is completely independent and free from political influence. We know that both the Justice Department and the White House were involved in the decision whether to destroy these tapes, and it's possible that this investigation might lead us right into the Oval Office.

3. Hey, Joe...
talk to your colleague, Mr. Leahy, and demand that the Senate investigate this, as well as the Plame affair. Fuck Mukasey. He won't listen to you. He never should have been given a hearing.

8. Joe doesn't want the Senate to investigate this -- he wants an INDEPENDENT
counsel. That's his point. I have hope he's getting support for this - he's been calling for it since Day One.

11. Does he think that he's going to get Mukasey to do this?
We have Judiciary Committees in the House and Senate who can investigate at the same time...keep everybody honest.

I'm not criticizing Biden for calling for an independent counsel...I'm encouraging him to go a step further.

14. I'm hoping that he IS going a step further. I don't know what all it entails to
get the ball rolling, but I hope he's doing what it takes.

Maybe I'm not understanding the whole thing correctly, but it's my impression that Biden DOESN'T want Mukasey to have anything to do with it. Hence, the independent counsel. I've heard him say that we can't trust the AG for this President (and he was referring to Mukasey regarding this issue).

I also was of the belief that an independent counsel would be preferable TO the Judiciary committee and the Senate, which are partisan.

15. Has there been any news regarding this lately -- or has it conveniently
disappeared off the radar like SO MANY Bush crimes?

I'm glad Biden is bringing it to the fore again.

AND, what about the NIE? Where the fuck did that disappear to?

16. Step aside Senator Reid, Senator Biden has the drive, energy, intelligence and experience...
to do the job the way it's supposed to be done, the way the American people want it done. Then again, maybe we're better off with ol' Joe right where he is.

I'm so torn: "Anybody but Harry" isn't right, but Joe leaving his committees sure as hell isn't right either.

21. If he does run and Democrats are really serious about winning...
he'll be the Democratic nominee. However, if the Democrats want to play games with the Party, our country, and the world, they'll play a game of Peewee's Primary Playhouse, sprinkle magic dust on different celebrity-candidates and pretend their winning the presidency. But, lord knows, there's way too much at stake, so we won't have to worry about that happening. Democrats are a smart and serious bunch these days, eh?
