If a 527 does a hit piece on Obama calling him a Muslim or something of the sort it will backfire
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 03:17 AM by Quixote1818
A lot of people keep suggesting something like that will happen and we will lose. Sorry but I just don't buy it. If they do that it will completely blow up in their face! For one thing Democrats already went through that with the swift boater's and we WONT be putting up with that shit again. Every Democrat in the country will be up in a rage! Obama's campaign will be expecting such and be ready for it. I also don't think the American people will buy it this time around.

Note: I am an Edwards supporter but like Obama too.

1. obama would have to
grow a big long bushy beard for that to work on him. that's bullshit, and everyone knows it. and by the way, shame on hillary for having some of her staffers send out an email suggesting that very topic.

12. It's one thing to like the country and another to call it for what it is
People are suckers and see these 527 ads as objective facts. There is also a ton of bigotry in this country towards muslims. Enough to rival that of Mexicans at the current time.

Wanna know where an ad like that will play well?

THE SOUTH!!!!!

15. It might also bring out 75% of Mississippi's black population to vote
and that is one hell of a lot of blacks. 36% of the state is black and other southern states have similar numbers.

18. good point
the stigma against racism is stronger in america then the stigma against muslims. this would backfire so bad. the republicans would just look racist.

26. I personally don't
I am not everyone else.

BUT!!!

The high ratings for Lou Dobbs show which is nothing but a forum for bigotry stands as proof. So is the the ensuing ant-immigrant disscussion and the dishonest SOB's pushing it while glorifying European immigration (Wasn't much different except for the rules).

Racism, Xenophobia, Homophobia and all it's close cousins are alive and well in America. Point out that that Obama's middle name is Hussein and the xenophobes will go wild. In case you haven't been paying attention, Xenophobia is en vogue these days.

Especially on this board.

27. I have even heard conservative talk show hosts shoot the muslim stuff down
when people call in and say it. The Republicans are too afraid to go that route. It's too risky for them.

Give me a break. :eyes:

A couple thousand skin heads compared to a million blacks in each state.

19. InTheBrain is absolutely RIGHT

What country do these Obama supporters believe they are living in????

People voted for George Dumbya already after FOUR years of seeing his utter incompetance and disdain for the average American.

Does anyone honestly think that enough Americans are going to rise above their bigotries and prejudices and tendency to focus on inanities when voting to put B. Hussein Obama in the White House?

Please.... It won't happen.

are exactly why Obama has emphasized (in my view, sometimes OVER-emphasized) his Christian beliefs.

8. I got one of those "Obama is a Muslim" emails yesterday
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 02:52 AM by Quixote1818
I was so pissed off that I went back and gathered every address that had sent it or it had been sent to and emailed a response with all the facts to every one of them. I got those kind of emails about Kerry too but didn't go to those lengths. I think us Democrats have been burned one to many times and we are not going to put up with that shit again!

17. Excellent!
I've done that, too... backtracked to everyone who received or sent the RW slime and replied to ALL.

My daughter is good friends with one of Obama's ready-reply people and tells me they're champing at the bit.

They're not going to let anyone get away with calumny and slander!

9. For the most part I agree
I agree that for the most part it would backfire, except in states like the south where racism exists still. Attacks invoking racism/discrimination may work in some states in a statewide election like they did on Harold Ford, but in a national election it's bound to backfire in far more places then it would help.

Heck, Obama could even play off such an attack with his campaign's themes of hope, change, and uniting the country. He could say something like "this attack against me trying to falsely paint me as an extremist Muslim, even though I've been a Christian all my life, are the same politics of fear and dividing us that have fed up America with the status quo in Washington".

13. The ones who will fall for it are not even on the radar yet.
They will look up after the World Series, put down their brews and ask, "Geez, who is running this time?". "Oh, Rudy!! He saved us from 9-11!! Woo HOO!!!". (Or McCain, etc etc.) There are not huge numbers of these voters, but enough to turn a few states, and that is all they need.

16. What Do You Think We'll Be Able to Do About It?
The reason "swift-boating" works so well for the Repiggies is that they can make a single ad buy and the Mighty Slime Machine will repeat it a thousand times for free.
Yes, they can do it again. Yes, they WILL do it again because it worked so well the last time.

It will be much easier for them to do it to Obama or Hillary than it was to do it to Kerry.
