4. Barack Obama on Donnie McClurkin
“I have clearly stated my belief that gays and lesbians are our brothers and sisters and should be provided the respect, dignity, and rights of all other citizens. I have consistently spoken directly to African-American religious leaders about the need to overcome the homophobia that persists in some parts our community so that we can confront issues like HIV/AIDS and broaden the reach of equal rights in this country.

"I strongly believe that African Americans and the LGBT community must stand together in the fight for equal rights. And so I strongly disagree with Reverend McClurkin’s views and will continue to fight for these rights as President of the United States to ensure that America is a country that spreads tolerance instead of division.”

-----------
The bold is mine because I love to use the bold option.

And NEVER apologized for it.

SHAME on Obama for gay-bashing in order to garner votes. SHAME.

7. whoa.... hold on
You can get mad at Obama for not saying he regrets hiring the guy for the thing, but don't start spreading lies about it. He hired the guy because he's a very popular singer. This doesn't excuse his gay-bashing, but it's not as if Obama hired him to go out there and bash "teh Gehys".

10. A pattern?
He says he will CHANGE ( there is that word again )the system of lobbyists, co-opting Edwards speech, BUT, has a campaign manager who is a drug company lobbyist.

What candidate accepts more PAYOLA $$$ from BIG PHARMA than ANY Rethug?

Barack Obama.

So, a pattern here?

8. I understand how you feel.
I felt the same. I have no link, but I read a statement by him basically saying that to end homophobia we need to reach out to homophobes. If we tell homophobes that we hate them and that they are stupid, then they will never listen to what we have to say. I think that there may be some truth to this. To use love to destroy hate.

I know that you can not agree with this on DU because the McClurkin thing is one of the best arguments against Obama, and even though you will support someone else, I hope that you think about it privately.

The concert opened with a prayer by the Rev. Andy Sidden, who is openly gay. Unfortunately, the prayer was done at the very beginning of the concert and only about half of the people were there at the time. It would have been better if Sidden waited until everyone was settled.

41. Hi eridani
Here is what was said at that concert.

“Don’t call me a bigot or anti-gay when I have suffered the same feelings,” he cried. “God delivered me from homosexuality,” he added. He then told the audience to believe the Bible over the blogs: “God is the only way.”

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/10/29/obamas-gospel-concert-tour/

If you know that more homophobic words were said by him at this concert please provide a link.

How about engaging them on health care or education?

This is happening at the debates.

Is there a written transcript? I would like to read it.

I have read some things that he has said outside of the concert and they were kind of scary.

What do you think the best way to tackle homophobia is? I don't know if Obama is going about it the best way, but as far as I can tell, he is the only candidate in the top three that is not only talking about the problems with homophobia, but how to address it.

I do wish that his position on gay marriage was the same as my favorite candidate, Kucinich.

45. The only way is to have a firm stance of "Everybody in, nobody out"
Don't compromise it at all. Obama's own minister performs gay marriages--why wasn't he the official representative of Obama's campaign? There are plenty of pro-gay rights gospel singers around also-- black LGBT activists have let Obama know all about it. Addressing it by giving dogwhistle messages implying that hate is Christian and OK is not fine by me. Kucinich really does push all our candidates in a better direction--maybe that will work with Obama eventually.

49. A good rationale but shouldn't BO have reached out to McClurkin in another setting?
Knowing that McClurkin was a loose cannon, I wouldn't have booked him for a high profile event. If BO wants to reach out to these folks he needs to do it w/out offending others.

Gays, like all other Americans, must be afforded equal rights INCLUDING the right to marry, if they so choose?

Pretty simple and straight forward -- unlike all the other convolutions he's had to undertake to remain the frontrunner.

22. I've made my position clear on this one.
I think Donnie McCloset is a hypocritcal, self hating piece of shit. I think Barack Obama was wrong to have him appear at an event.

I also think that one or two threads on the subject, which can be kicked and recommended, and replied to unto infinity, are more than sufficient, and that this constant spamming of the board with this subject is not necessary. Furthermore, it IS the Hillbots who are keeping this bullshit going, and it's not because they give a flying fuck about LGBT rights, but because they want to divert votes to Hillary. And in that respect, you can't leave the Hillbots out of the thread, but I'll say nothing of Mrs. Clinton herself this time.

New people are lurking and joining all the time. Many of these people are learning about the McClurkin fiasco from these threads. They are going to continue no matter how much you stamp your feet, and whine and pout. It's free speech and the mods will never censor that. The threads will continue to do what the mainstream media failed to do. Just consider gays an "inconvenient minority", because we're not going to shut-up until offenses against us are taken as seriously as those against any other group. Obama's political career would've been toast if he tried to pull something like this with any other minority.

It is astonishing that this bigot was given a microphone and a stage at a so-called "progressive" candidate's official, sanctioned campaign event and was given free rein to spew homophobic filth such as "God delivered me from homosexuality". Even more astonishing that said "progressive" candidate has yet to utter even one word of apology for this hate and bigotry delivered from his own stage
