Poll question: Have you seen Kerry or Edwards speak in person?
Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 05:19 PM by DjTj

Have you seen Kerry or Edwards speak in person? As Super Tuesday approaches, more and more of us have probably had a chance to attend a campaign rally, or perhaps some of us have seen these candidates speak in the past.

Have they been able to sway you? Who do prefer as a candidate in November?

(edited to clarify the "prefer" wording)

1. Why the "prefer" comment?

Does this mean who do you prefer as a candidate, or who is the better speaker - it is quite ambiguous.

I saw them both speak - Edwards gave one of the best stump speeches I have ever heard, but I prefer Kerry as the candidate best able to defeat *.

See what I mean? :)

4. Same here
I've actually seen Edwards speak twice on this campaign.

Once giving his stump speech, which is really great, and once (months earlier) giving a policy speech before a bunch of wonks, which sucked.

Kerry isn't as charismatic, and may not be as electable, but he's still the better candidate, imho. He has by far the best command of the issues, and he has the credibility to challenge Bush on national security.

9. Mobuto, from reading your posts I get the impression that you
pride yourself on being a DC resident who has met everyone and knows everyone (am I remembering you correctly?). Didn't you say that you've met Bush, Clinton, Gore, etc., in informal circumstances?

If my memory is accurate, I have a question. Do you think that the fact that you're so entrenched in what goes in DC means that you might have lost a little perspective on how the rest of America perceives the candidates.

I can understand how someone who gets excited about the machinations in DC would see Kerry as the MAN. But, I think the rest of America isn't going to be so turned on by that -- witness, Gore.

7. Edwards is by far the better speaker. I can understand how

he was so effective with juries.

As I told a friend, after that speech, I would probably have followed him off a cliff.

He was incredibly inspiring! He made me believe that we can fix all this cr*p and have a wonderful country, after all.

Don't know if it's possible to do that, but he really inspired me.

8. I've seen both - have no strong preference
I've decided to vote for DK in the primary and leave the nominee up to the wisdom of my fellow democrats. Dennis deserves this final show of support on Super Tuesday.

13. Seen the major Democrats, prefer Kerry
I was at the AARP sponsored Democratic Presidential Forum last November (when Dean was still the front runner). Attendees were Clark, Dean, Edwards, Gebhardt, Kerry and Lieberman. Kerry by far had a greater command of the issues and won over a large percentage of the 850 AARP members in attendance. Best part of the whole debate was when all 6 bashed AARP for endorsing the Medicare Rx bill and the members stood and cheered them. Too bad TPTB didn't get the member's message!:7

14. have seen them both several times
when they were tag-teaming SC in 2002. Definitely find Edwards more inspiring and appealing.

On a side note, I was at one function (Jim Clyburns' Fish Fry)following last year's SC Jefferson-Jackson Dinner where a bunch of us formed a phalanx so that each candidate couldn't help but stop and acknowledge us. Well, a tall Gynneth Paltrow-looking blonde next to me was waving her Kerry banner. John Edwards walked up to us, beamed that million-dollar smile, focused those eyes on her and that banner went in the trash. The guy has charisma and looks that TV doesn't do justice to.

Yeah, I know that's shallow but guess what? In today's telegenic age, charisma can and does trump substance. With Edwards, we have substance, too.
