"Reaching across the aisle" makes me nervous.
Is anyone else uncomfortable with Obama's "reach across the aisle" talk? I'm not sure the leadership of the Repug party can be trusted or worked with. I really think we need to be more confrontational and aggressive to get things done. Reaching across the aisle has produced things like DOMA, NAFTA, and welfare "reform".

As long as Obama continues to sound accomodationist, I won't be able to support him. I like the idea of an African-American in the White House, but not if the only way to get there is by making nice with the cons and the neo-cons.

I wish people would listen more to what Obama is saying, think about what it would mean.

Okay, I'll put on my asbestos suit now.

1. He has to bring in right-leaning Independent voters
So no I'm not uncomfortable with it, at least for now.

6. Every winning candidate says they'll reach out across the aisle.
It's been like that since forever. It's campaign 101.

Bush* is the first candidate I can remember who didn't make any effort to reach out across the aisle after the election, then again he didn't win.

24. He's already reached out to anti-gay bigots
And I don't like what I see. He should not be trucking with these people.

4. it's naive
It's like the story of the man who was bitten by a snake, and the snake says to him "you knew I was a snake" --- they are not to be trusted. They have PROVEN themselves untrustworthy.

This sounds like the kind of talk from someone who will let bygones be bygones, and not hold anyone accountable for crimes against the Constitution.

That's how Republicans have gotten away with Iran Contra and so many other attacks on the Constitution.

5. I share your concern.
Doesn't mean I won't support Obama, but I'm hoping it's mostly electioneering rhetoric and that once he's elected (if he's indeed the guy) he'll stand strong when it comes to liberal principles.

I'd feel more comfortable with someone promising to kick some ass, like Senator Edwards.

7. I don't think you need to worry about an asbestos suit, critters...
"reaching out across the aisle" in politics means compromise...which isn't necessarily a bad thing. However, as you suggest, it would be nice to know what kind of compromises are being considered before casting a vote. I, for one, am unwilling to support any compromise which further entangles religion and government...or even accepts the so-called "faith-based" institutions which have been put in place.

Just one example...

:hi:

OT, but...how is your "difficult decision" going...?

9. The only reason I would reach across the isle would be to........
hold them in place while I kick them in the nuts.
It's the only thing Obama say's that I find troubling. Then again, I think he says it because that will get him to the white house. Deep down I don't think he takes shit from anybody.

10. Come on now
Whether you like it or not, Republicans are people and the commander-in-chief has to attempt to represent them as well. It's part of being a uniter. Work for the whole country, not just your constituents.

11. "Reaching across the aisle" = "some of you are getting thrown under the bus"
"Reaching across the aisle" requires that Obama compromise someone's interests in exchange for protecting those interests he holds in higher regard. I've seen nothing which earns my trust that he'll use the right values to make this compromise.
