1. He's under the impression...
That all those retired New Yorkers down there will vote for him and help him carry the state.

I personally think he is in for a rude awakening, as I think Huckabee will carry Florida.

6. As of now
I have only seen ads from Romney and Giuliani. Obviously there is still time, but the press from the Iowa vitory and likely South Carolina victory will not be enough for Huckabee to win here. Huckabee needs to press hard here soon if he wants to make a move on Rudy.

11. How rampant are fundies down there?
I've heard they are just as bad in Florida as they are everywhere else in the South.

The evangelical ministers have et it be known, Huck is their man. With that, he won't need to spend alot of money.

2. Because
He took a gamble that he could hold off until Florida and Super Tuesday because his support in those states is large., while his support in Iowa and NH isn't. He just has to hope that one of the other candidates (huckabee, romney, mccain) doesn't roll of a few states in a row and I think his strategy will pay dividends when Florida and Super Tuesday comes around

3. I'm guessing his sickness impaired his ability to campaign strenuously.
The first photos of him right after he left the hospital were terrible. He looked like death. Very Cheneyesque.

Plus he's not very charismatic and so his appeal to small-state voters in the early contests is minimal.

5. Was he in Iowa?
I think his political philosophy is "Absence makes the heart grow fonder." The reality of his campaign however is "Familiarity breeds contempt!"

18. I think you're right. He could have won NH, spent a lot of time there.
With all the independents, plus the northeast connection, he could have beaten mittens and McCain. And he was spending a lot of time there but for some unknown reason, he stopped for a long time. Then started again, and then stopped.

I think his numerous character flaws betray him in this kind of marathon situation.

No pity from me... I hate the psycho idiot.

8. A Pretty Saavy Move
So long as the results of the other states remain muddled, he can conserve his resources to pick up some big delegate numbers in a race where that is likely to matter. I don't think we will see a national GOP candidate for awhile...because there are so many different directions in which the voters can hold their nose.

I don't see any real enthusiasm for any of the candidates, and the ones who seem the scariest also have major problems with their candidacy. Couple that with low voter turnout from the wingnuts and we've got Obama standing in the cold with one hand raised come next January.

17. exactly!
My dear sister is a die-hard Repub since 9/11. And she can't decide on a favorite amongst the GOP folks. No one is a "true" enough conservative in her mind, i.e., no one is the reincarnation of Reagan.

So she may sit out, or she may just vote for whoever ends up being the candidate. Hard to tell at this point.

9. I don't know what the answer is, but if you asked him ...
I'm sure the words "September 11th" would be part of the explanation. :P

10. Because 9/11 taught him that weather is unpredictable in Iowa in January.....
Edited on Mon Jan-07-08 02:36 PM by marmar
and 9/11 taught him that it's best to avoid N.H., since it's the closest early primary to Ground Zero.....
And Florida reminds him of 9/11 because there are so many people with New York accents there. .....

Did I mention that he was mayor of New York on 9/11? 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11.......

12. He basically came to the conclusion he couldn't win any contest until then.
Iowa didn't warm up to him.

Nor did New Hampshire.

South Carolina, forget about it.

13. He's running ads all over tv here.
Typical "invoking 9/11" fear ads. Short of Ron Paul signs, it's the only political ad campaign I've seen.
