Edited on Mon Jan-07-08 01:59 PM by XemaSab
*If* Obama wins the nomination, will you support him fully as our candidate going into the general election?

1. I'll have to see what the third parties have to offer....
I might still vote for Barack Obama in the general election-- it will depend on what he does and says during the campaign, and how well he represents my political interests. If the GE were held today, I'd say it's unlikely that I'd vote from Senator Obama-- I'd likely vote third party if there were a better candidate there and not vote if there wasn't. The current incarnation of Obama is just too complacent about the status quo for my tastes. Sure, Obama will be an historic president no matter what he does or doesn't do, but America needs FUNDAMENTAL change, and Senator Obama just doesn't seem to offer that outside of the history he'd make just by being elected. I want more than that.

and I didn't think he was the best candidate in 2004.

I don't think Obama is our best candidate this year but when these primaries are over and the voters had their say, I will support the nominee despite some personal reservations on a few of the potential nominees.

How enthusiastic my support is, would depend on what he says and does between now and then.

Let me also add that I am not an Obama "hater" by any means.

Not me. If I got the time to spend with Obama I'd rather discuss the Constitution with him or community activism or what he thinks regarding the U.S. role in the world. You seem a bit more into the frivolous.

And you're disingenuous as hell. You know perfectly well that comparing any dem to bushco is as big an insult as there is. I dislike that kind of passive agressive bullshit- and you tossed it out there.

40. Uh, the thread is about hate...I spoke up against hate.....
Having beers with people instead of shitting on them prevents angry confrontation if not physical harm.

I'll stick to having beers and shooting pool or shooting baskets WITH people I don't like, rather than taunting them or just plain outright hating them.

Hate described on these threads and on forum board everywhere and anywhere else, comes from a lack of maturity and circumspection regarding what politics is really all about.

Skinner posted a similar thread promoting Hillary. I'm sure he's got an Edwards thread in the works. I wouldn't presume to guess his actual preferences, but it seems like he's staying "officially" neutral.

46. The state of Iowa also wants its millions every four years.
All they did was try to seem to be cool enough to vote for a black man so all the
attention will return 4 years from now. That caucus situation is most intimidating
and seemed like a 'herd mentality' and groupthink combined. Neither IA or NH is
representative of the rest of the most populous states who are 'naturally cool' and
don't have to try as hard as IA and NH.

67. I am pretty sure the Revenue Collection department in the state of Iowa would beg to differ.
ANY state can decide when to have to have their caucus/primary. It has NOTHING to do with money.

However, Iowa being first has everything to do with Iowans wanting to be heard in the process. Quite frankly, once the candidates are chosen, Iowa and other small electoral vote states will no longer get any attention from either the press or the candidates themselves. Nothing to do with money, everything to do with having their voices heard and be counted.

21. You know what's sad? the Obama supporters on DU have turned me against him.
At first I was interested in what Obama had to say when the season was getting started. After researching him, and Edwards, and Clinton, I was leaning more toward the Edwards and Clinton. Obama seemed okay, and I wouldn't discount supporting him completely. I just felt that Edwards, and moreso Clinton, represented where I am personally and politically.

Then... I started coming back to DU (I've been here since 2001). Here I was witness to the ugliest, most aggressive, and nastiest, political supporters since ventured over to Freeperland for shits and giggles a few times. Those supporters? All Obama's fans. Seriously. Edwards supporters are by far the NICEST. I would have no qualms about not only donating my time, but money, to him should he get the nod, or Hillary drop out of the race. Obama? Based upon the nasty-ass attitude of his supporters (some I suspect are PAID TO BE HERE), I will hold my nose and vote for him to keep a repub out of office. The level of gleeful attacks on Senator Clinton perpetrated by Obama supporters rivals anything I've seen on DU before. To the obama supporters here: In your breathless and heartless attempts to knock down the other candidates, you've done two things: 1) strenghtened the resolve for those that support the candidates you relentlessly attack. 2) Make sure that those that don't support Obama now have an ugly taste in their mouth whenever we consider having to vote for him. The obama supporters are driving people away from him.

Much sadder? That you'd let people on a political website influence your vote like that. That's just pitiful. And I find Edwards supporters insufferably self-righteous. So there you go, it all depends on the lens you use.

Edited on Mon Jan-07-08 02:34 PM by VarnettaTuckpocket
If you live in a solidly red state, voting or not voting won't make any difference anyway. Dem votes aren't counted in solidly red states anyway. It's mostly the purple states where this question applies. If I lived in a purple state, I would vote for Obama. I don't though, and right now I don't think I will vote for him. Whatever the case, it won't affect the outcome of the race. And if Obama is the nominee, of course I'd want him to win.
