Poll: Kerry swamping Edwards in California

Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry has opened an overwhelming lead over John Edwards in California, where a majority of the state's voters have a negative opinion of the job President Bush is doing for the first time in his presidency, according to a new Field Poll.

California voters' appraisal of Bush's performance has taken a nose dive in the past month.

In January, the Field Poll showed that 52 percent approved of the job the Republican president was doing, compared with 42 percent who disapproved. A month later, those numbers have reversed, with 43 percent approving versus 51 percent disapproving.

In addition, California voters have an increasingly gloomy view of the way things are going in the country. When asked if the nation was going in the right direction or was on the wrong track, 52 percent responded "wrong track" – higher than at any point since the recession of the early 1990s.
