I must admit: McClurkin was a savvy campaign move.
Most Democrats, Independents and Republicans do not support the gays. It is helping to fuel Obama's popularity with those groups.

4. Gee! Imagine the fun of starting another stupid thread about McClurkin
Do you have anything else to talk about? Do you have proof that "most Democrats, Independents and Republicans do not support the gays"?

As for Obama, it has been stated ad nauseum that he does not support McClurkin's views. What would the homophobes say about that?

Ah, never mind...

5. Gays account for 20% of society (and gay friendly folks)

your comment is patently untrue.

The gay community has the money (and in the case of Howard Dean, Georgia's gay money) kickstarted and ultimately led to Dean's success as head of the DNC.

Don't tell me the democrats don't support the gays,

Nancy pelosi has worked hard with HRC and Joe SOlomnese of HRC to get both hate crimes and ENDA workplace discrimination into bills and proposed... that they didn't pass is another function of a lame congress.

But the fact remains, the gay whipping post folks keep using has it's backlash.

In Georgia the very popular by most Cathy Cox was kicked out of the race the minute she supported the Sonny Perdue proposal to ban gay marriage during her run.

I think you'll find that we outnumber even the fundamentalist christian percentages...

the bottom line is you have no facts to back up what you say and all 3 of the top guys support civil unions and other workplace and hate crimes legislation even if they don't talk about it.

but Obama's McClurkin stunt, well count me in to make sure that man never sees the inside of the white house.

Obama will never live down in history slapping another minority group (gay folk) trying to plug his own minority background. it will be a new low for american history if a black man gets in on the backs of gay people....

and we are richer and more organized than any other lobby in the country.

THE GAY BACKLASH COMETH...

76. Counsels Gays on how to convert from Homosexuality

Donnie McClurkin gay Barack Obama Mary Mary Hezekiah Walker Mighty Clouds of Joy Byron Cage church religion homophobia anti-gay gospel concerts California concert gay comments cured of homosexuality
Things began to unravel in early October when Obama's "Embrace the Change" gospel concert series announced Hezekiah Walker, Byron Cage and other gospel greats as part of the lineup. There was also contemporary sister duo Mary Mary, who in March 2007, encouraged gays and lesbians to "align themselves with the Bible" and compared homosexuals to murderers.

The most problematic addition, however, was Donnie McClurkin, a self-proclaimed ex-gay who "counsels" young people on how to convert from homosexuality. Donnie McClurkin is arguably the most famous, and most profitable, face in gospel music.

In an effort at damage control, Obama's camp released a statement on October 25th saying they were unaware of McClurkin's beliefs and admits the ex-gay's comments on homosexuality are "deeply hurtful and offensive to many Americans" but also states, "at the same time, a great many African Americans share Pastor McClurkin's beliefs. This also cannot be ignored." we all know that black preachers and southern white preachers account for a whole lotta child incest activity.

so let's not even question the facts here, THE FACTS ARE CLEAR... Donnie McClurkin advocates sending gay kids to be fixed wherever and however that might happen including camps..

AND I MIGHT ADD.. this STATEMENT FROM THE OBAMA CAMPAIGN, it's a little like saying,
"WE all know that Ku Klux Klan Members also have their views against Black folk, let's not discount their voices too!"

Obama dammit, you just don't get it. you can't be for and against homosexuality at the same time. you have to make a stand.

you don't deserve to be our president. end of story.

Well of course you are! Because, number one, you are a flamebait psy-ops pushing sockpuppet. And because the homophobe has to do a certain set of very specific acts involving singing, MCing, and being on stage. No other association with bigots is problematic, even if they are the candidate's state co-chair and being paid $10000 a month as a consultant.

Oh and I already know the standard rebuttals:

"That's diiiiiiiifferent!"

"He didn't go on staaaaaaaaaage!"

"Stop pointing the finger at my candidate's bigot-pandering! You finger pointer!"

Meh.

14. Zulch answers that question better than I
This is the first section of Zulch's thread, before he gives a quotation of Obama's statement after McClurkin's ex-gay status was made mainstream knowledge:

<i>There have been a few threads about Barack Obama and the Donnie McClurkin incident. McClurkin had performed at one concert in Columbia, South Carolina and Obama was not present at the event, which is not what some have decided was the bet way to lie about the event. </i>

Zulch states more about the event itself, and includes a link to a videotape of some of the event. After that, Zulch gives some highlights of Obama's record, and the web addresses of the organizations he got the information from. I won't post the entire thing here. I think more people should read Zulch's thread itself, thus the link:

http://www.outfordemocracy.org/obama.htm
http://www.sovo.com/2007/5-25/Obama.pdf

The bullet points are:

* Expand Hate Crimes Statutes:
* Fight Workplace Discrimination:
* Promote Gay and Lesbian Rights:
* Support Full Civil Unions:
* Oppose a Constitutional Ban on Gay Marriage:
* Repeal Don’t Ask-Don’t Tell:
* Expand Adoption Rights:
* Fight AIDS Worldwide:
* Promote AIDS Prevention:
* Empower Women to Prevent HIV/AIDS:

Others can undoubtedly point to more. After giving a personal biography of himself, and his own investedness within the GLBT community, Zulch ends by saying:

<i>"I post this mostly because I feel that some use the McClurkin event on almost a McCarthyistic approach. After looking at Obama’s proven record on LGBT issues over a dozen years (and more) and seeing how the unfortunate events with McClurkin’s one performance with other bands on one night, I just find it incredibly transparent that some people are willing to condemn both he and his supporters as homophobic.

In my view, it is exactly like Joe McCarthy condemning someone who once went to a Communist or socialist meeting ONCE and declaring them an enemy of the country and a communist that should be arrested and thrown in prison. If this seems like a strong statement, it is meant to be.

Was the McClurkin event something I am proud of? No. Was it hurtful to the LGBT community? Possibly and maybe so. Does it mean that Obama is a homophobe and/or are his supporters? Absolutely not.

Obama talks about keeping dialogue with those that may not agree with you or I politically (and I consider homophobia political as well as the wrong side of spiritual). How do you change the opinion of a person who sees things the wrong way but through dialog? How do we advance as a country without engaging everyone who is part of the puzzle?

I hope that those who disagree with the McClurkin event open their eyes to the whole picture in an honest way. Accusing me of being a homophobe because I want to address this issue head on is a copout.

It’s not that I think we should “move on” on the issue. It is that we should do exactly as Obama stated and engage in discussion with people who are homophobes and get them to see the best way to go forward."</i>

And that is how Zulch answers your question about whether this is a gays only issue. Something insiduous is going down, here. It's not right.

Edited on Mon Jan-07-08 01:38 AM by Azathoth
Or even of the Democratic base. If you think that more than a handful of people in Iowa or New Hampshire even know who McClurkin is, much less his life story, then I've got some beach front property in Kansas to sell you.

Voters are interested in Obama's record and his positions on the issues; his positions on LGBT issues are every bit as progressive as Hillary's (whose "35 years of experience" includes pushing through DOMA and Don't Ask Don't Tell). Voters don't care about a handful of Hillaryites screaming about some obscure gospel singer and peddling the obnoxious, hyperbolic, patently dishonest claim that Obama, who has supported LGBT rights his entire career, "throws gays under the bus."

70. The mistake most of you keep making
is to make this an Obama/Hillary dynamic. A lot of the gays and lesbians here who are pissed about this don't support Hillary in the least. Most of the blogs I just directed to you aren't Hillary hotbeds of support either. Believe it or not, one can have a strong opinion on something a candidate did or said, without the opinion being grounded in partisanship. My feelings on this are genuine. Go ahead and discount them. Apparently you seem to think that it's not legitimate for me to want to feel comfortable that I won't have yet another President hostile to my family. If you can't understand that, on a gut level, there's nothing I can say to you to make you get it.

77. True, some of the anger does not come from Hillary supporters
The only thing I can say to folks who were genuinely offended by the McClurkin fiasco is to ask them to try and consider Obama's record objectively. Some may not be able to bring themselves to support him, and I can certainly respect that, but I would hope that those who don't support him at least characterize the guy's record and positions fairly. He ain't perfect, but he's certainly not a GOP wingnut bigot either.

On the other hand, from what I've seen, a good portion of the McClurkin outrage in the blogosphere and message boards comes from people who were already predisposed to hate Obama, many of whom were/are Hillaryites pushing their "divide and conquer" strategy. These are the same people who are now trying to swiftboat Obama over his admirable work to support women's rights when he was back in Illinois.

Especially when they have a Homophobe Hiring Hillary avatar.

41. Really?
I was extremely impressed with Obama's 2004 convention speech and I literally forced my partner to watch his 2008 campaign kickoff in Springfield last year. I ended up supporting Joe Biden, not one of the other top two, but my objections to what Obama did have never been in any way shape or form partisan. They are serious, heartfelt and real. I have no candidate now. I'm STILL trying to find a way to support him, if he's our nominee. If you wish to keep making false statements and trivializing other people's views, knock yourself out. But know that you couldn't be more mistaken.

46. Most of the blogosphere does
Do a simple exercise and google two words: OBAMA GAY

You will not find on the first few pages links to all the wonderful pro gay and lesbian policy positions Obama's supporters allude to.

Tell us what you do find. And, remember, this is a search without even using the name McClurkin.

50. False.
"Most of the blogosphere" either doesn't know about it or doesn't care enough to thump their chests in such a self-righteous manner.

In fact, you can hardly speak for "most of the blogosphere" since many of them are Republicans and Independents anyway.

Do a search on "Hillary Vince Foster" and you'll find lots of unflattering links there, too.

A tiny, vocal number of bloggers and DUers care about this. Them and their sockpuppets.

60. You can find lots of stuff on Vince Foster with Google, too.
But keep ignoring reality.

You ignored the second half of what I've said twice already - that not many people know, and those who do don't care.

Don't believe me, go ahead and scream it from the rooftops. Nobody cares about sockpuppet indignation.

"If you think poeple who read Kos, MyDD, HuffPo Aravosis, etc don't know about this, you're seriously deluded."

If you think that's all I said, you need to take remedial English. Again.

read the web. Read this site. Lots and lots of people care. The only sockpuppet mentality I see on this is from Obama supporters who try to chronically minimize it and arrogantly dismiss the people expressing how troubled they are by the entire affair.

73. Yes, trolls and sockpuppets care immensely.
"read the web."

1. That is laughably impossible.

2. I have frequented many blogs and political sites. Most people are in one of these camps:

a) They don't know.

b) They don't care.

c) They realize it was a mistake, but it's not that big of a deal to them.

d) They care so much that many like-minded people with low post counts start mysteriously appearing and backing them up. :eyes:

"Read this site."

I did. Most people, save for a select few who are known to repeat themselves excessively, are not that "concerned" about it.

"Lots and lots of people care."

The whole point of a sockpuppet is to artificially inflate Internet support for a cause. So no, they don't, not in Iowa, and not anywhere else.

"The only sockpuppet mentality I see on this is from Obama supporters who try to chronically minimize it and arrogantly dismiss the people expressing how troubled they are by the entire affair."

Yes, the entire state of Iowa is a bunch of Internet-savvy bloggers and their sockpuppets.

:rofl: :rofl: :rofl:

If you weren't so desperate to bash Obama and get attention, you'd realize that most liberals and progressives don't like what Obama did, they realize the man has a US Senate record of supporting gay rights, he supports civil unions (which is more than John Kerry ever did) and the McClurkin incident was a drop in the bucket as far as gay rights are concerned.

But I don't expect reason and logic to resonate with you, so I'll continue laughing at your nonsensical rantings.

:rofl: :rofl: :rofl:

78. Obviously you know jack about gay rights
John Kerry did indeed support civil unions, and, more than that, was one of the only Senators to vote against DOMA.

Feel free to tell us all about Obama's US SENATE record of supporting gay rights. So about these civil unions. Has he introduced a federal civil unions bill in Congress?

It's usually a good idea to bone up on an issue BEFORE you make a public fool out of yourself.

39. Why
Do people insist on calling the two male candidates by their last name, but Senator Clinton is "Hillary."

I think we're all smart enough to realize which Clinton is being spoken of when we're discussing the election.

I think I'm going to make a macro of this post.

Olbermann asked the same question, in the middle of his live show, of his writers. I've been asking it for months now.

Nothing personal, but your post has brought up the issue, again.

And no, I'm not a Clinton Supporter. I'm not an Obama supporter either. I was leaning Edwards, but I've decided to either not vote in the primary (RI primary is meaningless) or write in a name.

You tout Obama's support among the least homophobic group, young people, and then you don't realize that adding "and most of them don't know about McClurkin anyway" completely undoes the point you were trying to make. Most of them don't know about the McClurkin fiasco, but if they did, Obama would've lost a lot of support among that group. So Obama only has such strong support with young people, because they don't know about his betrayal of the gay community. The anti-gay MSM didn't think the McClurkin fiasco was worth focusing on.

63. Why do you repeat the refrain over and over
that people who are angry about this are "forcing" others to think like them. Nothing could be further from the truth. This incident and everything that emanated from it totally changed my perception of who Obama is. I will vote for him if he's our nominee, but I am expecting and hoping that he will make this right down the road, so a lot of us can do more than just pull the lever for him or, for some, sadly sit it out entirely. I want to like the guy, my objections to this entire debacle is because it makes me feel like he might be a President hostile to my family's best interests, and I don't want to feel that way about a potential Democratic President. It wouldn't take much effort on his part to make this go away. Those are my thoughts, they are my viewpoints, they impact my life and they are not intended in any way to force anyone to feel or vote anything. We have freedom of thought in this country and if you want to discount my genuine interest in seeing this addressed and resolved so that we can all be on the bus together, then that's your loss, not mine. Almost no Obama supporters have said, gee, I know you guys must feel really alienated by this and we understand what you're feeling and we hope Obama makes it right with a simple overture. Instead we get insults, hostility and our concerns dismissed. Pretty damn sad for a putatively progressive site.
