GOP standoffish on gay marriage ban for now
but will they rush into it come late summer or fall?

"
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush wants quick election-year enactment of a constitutional amendment prohibiting gays from marrying each other, but Republicans in Congress are not rushing to heed his call.

After Bush's announcement Tuesday, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, said it would take time to gauge the level of support in Congress for a constitutional amendment. He suggested the difficulty of passing one may cause lawmakers to take a different approach to preserving marriage as a solely man-woman union.

"We don't want to do this in haste," DeLay said."

1. McCain and Chaffee have already come out against it
And in a surprise, my own senator George Allen, while not saying explicitly that he was against it, didn't sound all that enthusiastic about it.

2. They are setting the stage for the phony debate...
W gets to rile up the fundies for his presidential campaign and take the focus off his abysmal record. Meanwhile repugs in congress can give the big wink, wink to libertarians, etc., and let them know that it will never happen.

3. They either set this up or this is backfiring on Bush
How I'd love to see his own ranks refuse to take this up if he was serious about it.

Somehow I smell a rat.
