Richardson's remarks on Iraq at the 2003 DNC Convention
Edited on Sat Jan-05-08 12:05 PM by MethuenProgressive
It took a while for the others to get on board, even Obama said in 04 he didn't know how he would've voted on the IWR. Bill Richardson was right on Iraq in 2003, and he's right on Iraq today.

The other top four won't pledge to get us out before 2013.

1. Quote truncating.
The Russert gift that keeps on giving.

'But, I'm not privy to Senate intelligence reports,'' Mr. Obama said. ''What would I have done? I don't know. What I know is that from my vantage point the case was not made.''[/div

3. Obama's opposition to the Invasion of Iraq was WAY tooooo careful for me.
Richardson was never afraid to oppose popular trends on this issue.

the corporatist machine covering its bets. That would be the same machine that supplied all of those so-called "Independents" and cross-over votes for O in Iowa. "Independents" and cross-overs are often simply un-informed power-hounds and they ARE the national FAD right now. And the problem with this "third thing" is that differences get obfuscated between things that ARE in FACT different. I am somewhat consoled by the fact that the WHOLE thing IS a VERB - i.e. in the state of change, but that does not obviate each person's responsibilities for the differences that are the most essential manifestations of PRIVATE personal values. And for me one of those values has to do with the persons who knew how evil the Invasion of Iraq was from the start and didn't TEST reactions before actually standing up and making a STRONG statement on this fact. Obama DID NOT DO THAT and I am bound by conscience, not political expediency, to say so.

7. He's definitely accomplished one goal, the top three are moving to his position.
At least one thing that the Richardson campaign can say, is that they've pulled the top three into ending the war sooner. His consistent position on immediate withdrawal has kept the war from fading into a side issue.

Richardson's foreign policy approach is very different from most. He actually listens to what the people in other countries want and not solely what the Washington talking heads say. The majority of Iraqis want us to leave. The majority of Pakistanis want us to stop supporting Musharraf. Richardson realizes that it is best to listen to the people actually affected by our actions.
