Hillary Campaign Won't Air Ads Attacking Obama
Hillary Campaign Won't Air Ads Attacking Obama
By Greg Sargent - January 5, 2008, 9:16AM

The Hillary campaign, which has promised a sharpening of "contrast" between her and Obama in the days ahead, appears to have concluded that they won't be running any ads against Obama in the run-up to the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday:

Clinton advisers said Friday that they would not mount a negative advertising campaign against Mr. Obama in New Hampshire, saying the primary was too soon for such an onslaught to have any effect.
Relatedly, Mark Halperin quotes a source telling him that a new Hillary spot has been delivered to New Hampshire stations that may or may not have aired yet. Halperin describes the spot as a "postitive ad with subtle contrast on experience."

I can confirm that this is correct. I spoke to an official at WMUR yesterday, and he told me that they did indeed have a Hillary spot in the can set to run. He told me that the spot wasn't a negative one, adding that the gist of it was that Hillary is "the only candidate set to lead on day one." It's unclear whether it has run -- or whether it will.

1. Then they're doomed
It was a risky strategy, anyway. Too sharp and Obama could play the racism card, not strong enough and she comes across as a desperate campaigner.

I think the only way Obama's momentum train slows down is if he commits some sort of gaffe that Hillary and Edwards can exploit.

3. Just because they say they are not running negative ads doesn't mean they won't smear him otherwise.
Edited on Sat Jan-05-08 09:48 AM by jefferson_dem
...using whispering campaigns, strategic oppo leaks, and so forth.

We know they are not "above" that...

15. True,
but that tactic has backfired badly for them in recent months, and right now at least, that's more risky than TV attack ads.

Obama has the American press and people eating out of the palm of his hand, and the only person that can derail Obama is himself.

What does that suggest?

Snopes doesn't mention Clinton, if that's the rumor you're trying to spread.

20. what bullshit.
do you deny the rumor campaign started by her people in Iowa? Do you deny that Penn stood on MSNCB and repeatedly mentioned coke dealing and coke?

You guys really suck. When your annointed, guaranteed 35 yrs of experience candidate crashes and burns in NH, what will your next meme be? That he is a white slave trader? No, wait, what about that secret file that her top campaigners were bragging about on cable news.

the fastest way to truly piss off moderates and progressives is doing exactly what you folks are doing here and elsewhere.

all repeating the same lie.

But, hey, lie becomes truth if it's repeated enough. We learned that from Bush.

I've always thought negative ads in primary season were a bad idea--they give the opposition ammunition to be used against us in the general election.

Edited on Sat Jan-05-08 10:41 AM by RFKin2008
Americans are sick of political dumpster diving.

If Hillary wants to win, she's gonna have to find another way to do it.

Here's an idea she could "borrow" from Huck: perhaps she could hold a press conference declaring she is pulling a negative attack ad, then run the ad for reporters? LOL.:)

19. Yeah, right. One of the chief aims of her campaign
has been to smear Obama, and she and her campaign supporters have had an "entitlement" mentality from day one, whereby she automatically "deserves" to be the nominee and anyone standing in her way is fair game. I mean, how DARE people vote for ANYONE other than Saint Hillary? I'll believe this when I see it.

If it is true, maybe they're finally realizing that such Rovian smear tactics aren't going to work and, indeed, have backfired on them bigtime.
