1. Still no substance. And how can he claim to be able to unify?

3. It's incredibly naive, isn't it?
I guess it's an age old deal though- tell people what they want to believe, and they'll ignore reality.

7. Game over. Time to show his hand. Either he's holding
something of substance or he's got nothing.

12. http://www.barackobama.com : read his platform. You obviously haven't.
Sorry he's only giving you inspiration and not the soundbite you are looking for!

17. No. I want to hear it from his mouth. He knows how to speak.
Let's hear what he's going to do while both feet are planted on one side of the fence. The Republicans will eat him alive for his flowery wishy-washy sunny-weather not-saying-a-damn-thing speeches.

did you go to a rally? Did you go to one for Clinton? You aren't going to hear a platform out
directly out of his mouth any other way. There is absolutely no way, in a debate with very limited time to answer, that you are going to get a candidate's entire platform. You haven't gotten that from ANY other candidate!!!

If you aren't willing to read his platform and know what he stands for, then you have no basis for your argument.

The individual lacking substance is you.

23. Just curious,
I'm assuming you've checked out his website, right? Did you find the information you were looking for? http://www.barackobama.com/index.php I am assuming that you're sincere, so looking forward to hearing your reflection on his issues info.

OK, aloha...

13. Projecting the ability to lead
Edited on Fri Jan-04-08 11:03 PM by Politicub
counts as substance to me. Though admittedly, it is subjective.

I know Obama doesn't need this Hillary supporter defending him, but the lack of substance argument gets rather old. Much of political appeal can be because of those intangibles like charisma. We are all human, after all.

Not that charisma is everything, or should be everything, but it doesn't hurt.

I'm happy with our slate of contenders. Any of them are far better than anything the GOP would have to offer.

25. You do know how campaign ads work, right?
You're given at most 30 seconds to get your message out there. It's not possible to dish out an entire stump speech with complete substance in one campaign ad. Each candidate has to be vague, or they wouldn't be able to have an ad at all.

See this is what I don't get. If Obama were to address the issues, you'd attack him for not giving the specifics. Even though in 30 seconds you can't really do that. So he has a refreshing ad that talks about one of his strengths and you say it lacks substance. Well are you expecting a movie here? I've seen ads from every major candidate and none offer much substance, because you can't really have substance in a 30 second message.

2. And what makes any other candidate able to unify?
For sure not HC, maybe Edwards.

This man represents "NEW" not "OLD."

As much as I love Madaline Albright, when I saw her standing on that stage last night, it makes me think of the Clinton Days.

Those days were wonderful, but they are over and Bill Clinton nor HC can bring them back.

CHANGE! PLEASE! We need a new day!

6. REAL CHANGE, NOT RHETORIC
Edited on Fri Jan-04-08 10:51 PM by ClericJohnPreston
With Obama it is empty rhetoric, not policy. A make believe world, like the "Matrix" we already live under where the average person doesn't realize it is Corporations as the man behind the curtain, not Rove or a singular entity. These Corporations pull the dummy strings of Dumbya, the puppet enabler.

Edwards knows who really wields power in America and it isn't followed by a letter "D" or "R", but by INC. or CO.

Neuter Corporations Now. Don't support their candidates, Republican or Democrat, because even Murdoch contributes to Hillary now. The same for Obama. His palms outstretched have collected Corporate insurance dollars, all the while he promises reform.

Yeah....sure.

So many people believe that. But, as Barnum said and GWB elected twice proves, "a sucker is born every minute".

16. How can you single out
any one of these candidates when in order to play... even in a senatorial bid.. you need some serious backing? The fact that corporations own the government is either a fact or it's not. No one gets to play without them. Some want a candidate that will be able to play nice with corporations and bring back the pendulum. But nobody seems to want a true progressive, otherwise you would still be bemoaning the non-elect-ability of Dennis Kucinich.

29. Sad to say it's probably true that the majority doesn't want
a "true progressive."

I love Dennis but he tells the truth ALL of the time.

We were able to see in Iowa, and we know in our heart of hearts, that he is not "electable."

So, we progressives need to take a good look at ourselves and realize that if we ever want to get anyone with even 1/2 of our dreams played out, WE will have to bend.

May the best man or woman win and let it please be a DEMOCRAT.

10. NAFTA GAT? Not to wonderful in hindsight.
And we need to strengthen our ties abroad. I think Barack is uniquely situated to do just that.
He comes from a multicultural background and brings back an air of respect for the rights of others and human rights.

Additionally, I've read his platform and encourage others to do the same before claiming he has no substance.

If you want a manufactured soundbite that sounds like an position on an issue (although it changes based on polls and crowds), go for Hillary.

To be honest with you, domestically, the top three are not all that different in their policies. Lack of judgment on foreign policy and the reckless use of our brave men and women in the military, antagonizing and threatening other nations as opposed to using vigorous true diplomacy is what turns me off to Hillary.

She is not a change agent. She is the old guard as evidenced by the group behind her at her concession speech.

27. The other candidates are not saying they want to unify. That's the difference.
Edited on Sat Jan-05-08 09:36 AM by indie_ana_500
I've seen posts here on DU using the "unify" and appeal to Independents, and working with non-progressives positions as weapons, like they are not the positions they want.

I think that's one difference.

Surely, you have some degree of literacy as you are capable of spamming these boards with demands that people tell you what he's saying. A word of advice: don't be a tool. Do your own research.
