This shit is just getting ridiculous. Obama won in Iowa last night in a very impressive manner. He did all the right things. He had Democrats, independents, first time voters and more than a few Republicans. . .its politics that is what you are supposed to do. He connects to the crowds he talks to, he uses a tone and a speaking cadence that reminds you of southern preachers.

I'm sorry if your candidates don't have what he has. You are no longer even trying to sell your candidates, you are just trying to tear Obama down, have fun.

I love Clinton and Edwards and can be very happy with both of them as well, but right now Obama is hot and he may very well secure the nomination.

4. Well, it's too early to determine who is getting the nomination...
Obama gave a hell of a good speech last night. Yeah, he sounded a little preachy to me...like I was sitting at the baptist church I used to attend as a kid. I never liked church. But it was still a good speech.

Obama's getting attention right now and I think it's a good thing. Not because he might get the nom or even win New Hampshire. It's because he's showing who he is to the US. People are looking at him and starting to make determinations on what they think of him. He's still new and people need to learn more about him.

I've seen a few polls with Hillary having a substantial lead in N.H. over Obama so it's really hard to predict what's going to happen at this point.

7. Its not the status of the race, its the fact that the more popular he becomes in the REAL WORLD. . .
. . .you know where people worry about real issues, the more he is bashed here on DU. These bashers are not even offering up talking points in support of other candidates, they are just bashing away. . .LOL

15. Oh I'm happy and I'm also tickled by the pathetic efforts to tear him down. . .
. . .I have no desire to ridicule the supports of the candidates who didn't win because I could easily support those candidates, but I have no problem laughing at the folks who are going out of their way to tear Obama down.

personality off putting, his whole, to *me* sort of devoid of everything but this superfluous drama is how i take him. granted, if i like him, maybe it the speech would be palatable, but i also am the first to say when hil is acting crazy too, infact, in one recent post i wrote that she can't modulate her voice and it drives me nuts. i DO know what you are saying though.

27. I agree, Annie1
I was raised a hardcore Baptist---and got away from it as soon as I could!

The strange thing is, last night I mentioned this very thing to my husband--that both Obama and Huckabee were preaching---and that turns me WAY off~ but, maybe that's just me.

I've been wavering--but I'm also tired of John Edwards and his 'common man' stuff--I really think that my choice would be Hillary--I'm beginning to not have any good feelings for Edwards or Obama, just in the last week or so..........I trust her, whether I agree completely with her plans or not--the other two--well, I'm not so sure any more.

25. What about the New England "accent" that some didn't like
about two of the greatest public speakers of our time- RFK and JFK.

Remember those remarks?

So, what some are saying is that everyone must speak like a WASP.

If not, you "talk ethnic."

:puke: that is insulting----

Hello -- this is now a multi cultural society and there is no BEST WAY to speak.

I am shocked that a "progressive" board is so upset now with the way that Sen. Obama speaks.

I am sick and tired of hearing people harp on the way that he speaks.
It was certainly "proper enough" to be a top student at one of the prize universities in the world.

GET OVER IT and seek to understand the root of your dislike.

IT's his RACE that really bothers some.

And that is exactly why he WON in Iowa. The youth of America and a whole lot of others believe that is petty and I agree with them.

Wake up America! It's time for a change!

is being criticized, from his manner of speaking to the color of his skin to the color of his socks. Okay, not the color of his socks.

You know, guys...this may be partly why Hillary didn't fare better than she did...her supporters have not been the nicest of people. Supporters represent their candidates. When I see HIllary now, I see the other candidates at a debate and hear Hillary supporters booing them when they try to answer the moderators' questions. I will not vote for someone like that to be a nominee. We've already had 7 years of "I talk...you listen," and "I'll be glad to listen to anyone who is reasonable enough to agree with me."

19. "Hope" worked for B. Clinton. He was the boy from Hope, Arkansas. Remember his
video about A Town Called Hope.

I think Obama appeals to Republican corporatists, just as Romney does; and I think Obama appeals to the Religious Right just as Huckabee does. It could well be a winning combination but I don't think it will bring about much change.

24. It's funny, because before he was criticized for speaking like a professor
The guy can't win. Admit it, if you don't like someone, everything they do will irritate you.

Sociolinguists will tell you that most verybody speaks in different registers in different social contexts. I laugh sometimes at my professorial husband when he's watching a sporting game or talking to a dog or is with certain people: he lapses back into near Gullah, from his long-ago Carolinian past. "Do, Missy," he says .... when he's not talking about simulacra or something.

It's natural.
