Politico: "Meanwhile, Clinton and Obama think Edwards is a dead man walking."
"Meanwhile, Clinton and Obama think Edwards is a dead man walking. That is the consensus view of Democratic strategists interviewed. So it is a two-person race in their minds."

1. It's true. I don't see a way he can win--he trailing in his birth state, for God's sake.

2. They should probably wait until New Hampshire on that
If Edwards can be convincing enough there to win, he can carry on. I don't see him making it past SC, but stranger things have happened.

22. He can stay on his message
Clinton has to go tougher on Obama
Obama tries to keep his momentum going and knock Clinton down more in the polls
The press says they've gone negative.

Edwards tunes his message to "they're fightin' each other, I'm fightin for *you*"

He doesn't have to leapfrog, he just has to keep within single digits.

30. Yes that is his best shot
And of course he needs to give that a chance. But if he comes in behind Obama again, where else can he establish momentum? I doubt he expects Clinton's supporters to flock to him if Obama keeps winning. If he had deeper pockets he could hope that Clinton turns it around in later races and bloodies Obama badly and then they both sink in a mutual death grip negative spiral. I don't see Edwards having that type of staying power to realistically hold out for that though, unless perhaps Clinton comes in third in NH and Obama only barely edges Edwards out for first. Not a likely scenario but there is no reason for Edwards or his supporters to reevaluate his chances before New Hampshire, I agree with that.

32. Next week will be very telling
but Edwards stuck in there longer last time around than seemed realistic.

There is no denying he's a long shot but I wouldn't count him out unless he tanks in NH

4. It is always a mistake to write potential rivals prematurely.
I doubt either campaign is that foolish at this early point in the campaign.

Barring victory or a tie in NH, Edwards might be gone next week.

27. I think he'll concede before Super Tuesday
to help Obama in the LONG RUN. Whether Clinton or Obama wins NH is slighty irrelevant. It literally becomes a two-person race afterward.

whenever they do.

You probably clearly recall a recent futile effort to use politico as a news source for an LBN post. It was actually pretty amusing up to the time the OP was deleted. MKJ

26. I don't trust prognosticators
There is a big difference between 3 candidates within 9 point range and the top 3 Republican candidates having a 21 point range.

If anyone is a dead man walking it would be Thompson and McCain on the Republican side.

Both Clinton and Edwards are still in the running and if I was either of them I would wait until the Super Duper Tuesday Primaries.

Meanwhile our huge volunteer base in NH continue to make calls and and knock on doors. In addition we raised a record amount of money yesterday for the campaign thus far in a single day.
