Technical question - could Edwards undo the public finance if he chose to?

If money started spilling into his coffers, could he just pay back any public money and go private like everyone else?

If the answer is no, I'm ok with that. You should not be able to buy the election anyway and I'm willing to fight the hard way for and with an underfinanced underdog.

Just curious.
