How progressive is Hawaii?
What are the chances of DK having a strong (relative) showing today? I believe he is the only candidate to have actually campaigned there.

1. You are correct that he is the only candidate who has campaigned there
This is probably the place he has the strongest chance of winning some delegates.

8. Turnout will be very low
There is expected to be only a few thousand democrats who vote and if Kucinich is able to get his supporters to the polls, he may do very well. He is the only one who is campaigning there, so I don't think it is unreasonable to think he will do well.

Also, why didn't Kucinich get delegates from Maine? He got something like 15% so I thought he would get some but he didn't.

12. He didn't get enough delegates for the state convention
He had something like 16% of the votes at the caucuses, but only 14% of the delegates going to the state convention. There is a 15% threshold to get national convention delegates.

13. it was some complicated thing
he got like 16% of the popular vote but only 14.something % of the delegates to the state convention. he needed 15% of state delegates to get a national delegate. someone correct me if i am wrong, please.

he was never as liberal as Mink was. Just to add, He disagreed with the war on Iraq (well, sort of) and thought we shouldn't have gone into Liberia.

I really miss Mink. A lot.

was Mike Gabbard. He may run for Congress, but I am VERY sure that he will lose. Money from the Mormon church, Catholic church, and everwhere else was pouring into Hawaii.

We tried to make a civil unions law this year, but the legislature ran out of time.

As for Republicans in the state, there aren't that many. There is no Republican represenation to the Congress, 3 out of 25 of the St. Senators are Republicans, and 15 of the 43 seats in the State House are held by Republicans. Aside from the Governor, they are an endangered species.

Our Democratic legislature passed a resolution calling for the repeal of the Patriot Act and to not go to war with Iraq without a UN resolution.

4. It's a liberal paradise
Every time I hear a liberal say he's going to leave America in disgust, and live abroad, I think of Hawaii.

9. Well, she's pretty liberal for a republican
Lingle is kind of like Christie Whitman in that she is quite moderate but is a partisan republican.

She is the first republican governor of Hawaii in 40 years!

Hawaii is very liberal and the democratic establishment has had some ethical problems recently so she was able to win narrowly of Mazie Hirono. It doesn't mean much though about how progressive the state is.

10. This past election
Edited on Tue Feb-24-04 08:23 PM by La_Serpiente
was an anomaly. The Democratic party had serious scandals going on here.

She won't be in for very long. Her anti-environmental and anti-labor stances will get her out of office.

She is Pro-choice as well. I also believe that if a Civil Unions bill came to her desk, she would sign it.

18. She's the first one in forever. Both congressmen and Senators are Dems
He won't win, but I think DK has a 50/50 shot at second, which, since I love DK, would be great.
