It appears that the broadcast media has made "gay marriage"
THE issue for th election, drowning out any messages, re: jobs, illegal war, Bush* &Co investigations....

I scanned the TV channels during newstime (top of the hour) and that's the main story.

Maybe they will tire of it?

2. The hysteria will last a day or so
Edited on Tue Feb-24-04 07:45 PM by treefrogjohn
until the next big distraction(ie. news event). Kobe, Scott Petersen, Jacko, Martha. They are all distractions waiting in the wings for their chance to explode again onto stage center. And who knows what acts are in the wings. Much more entertaining than job losses, giant deficits, world chaos, etc. Don't you think? Sigh.

3. They Will Tire Of It, Sir
The politics of this are dicier than the right wants to believe. It is true a good majority of the people do not support such marriages, but a larger portion of the people does not feel it right to impose their moral views on others, and does not like people who attempt to do so. Therefore, it is indisputable that a great number of people who do not approve of such marriages are not inclined to force anyone to agree with them, and do not like people who try to do so. Making this matter a centerpiece of a Presidential campaign thus risks alienating a great number of voters, by convincing them the persons pressing for such a ban are moralistic fanatics, that they will find very offensive.

4. True. The majority also oppose the amendment against....
gay marriage too. The question of whether you are for or against
gay marriage is more of a personal one than one of public opinion at
large.

6. That Is True Too, My Friend
People do not like to tinker with the Constitution; they rather love that old document, as is.

7. Excellent post, Magistrate
Being against gay marriage does not necessarly translate into support for a constitutional amendment.

13. Thank You, Ma'am
There are other elements of risk to the right in this course, that you have pointed out below, in No. 5. That this is a mere distraction from serious matters is just too obvious to take many people in: to most people, the country is at war, they worry whether they will be employed next Christmas, the flood of Federal red ink is rising to the notice even of persons who know little but balancing a check-book, they dread a visit to the doctor lest it bring bad news that will collapse their finances, and somebody wants to shriek at them about homosexuals, over there in the corner, getting married! People will be angered that something so frivolous is being given so much energy, and view those who are pushing it on them as tricksters, and resent the implication they are too stupid to understand what is really important.

5. That's because it IS the story of the day
Bush can't run on anything else, that's obvious. Even if the media doesn't tire of it, the voters will because these kind of cultural issues matter when everything else is going well in the country. But with the economy stuck in a jobless recovery, pocketbook issues will not be forgotten, no matter how hard Bush attempts to distract from that.

8. Just the salacious flavor of the minute
Nothing is better for ratings than fear, and nothing is scarier to conservatives than the country being overrun by ho-mo-sectuals. If the Dems play this right, it will backfire. They need to just keep talking about issues that actually matter.

10. Well, for most people a job is more important
than what people do in the privacy of their bedrooms. Bush has underestimated this.

11. Of course they're covering it...
in the last few weeks, the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled that marriage had to apply to gays, the Massachusetts legislature called a constitutional convention to discuss the issue, the Mayor of San Francisco began giving out marriage licenses to thousands of couples, and the President of the United States has come out in favor of a constitutional amendment bannng gay marriage.

I'd be more concerned if they WEREN'T covering this. This isn't a media conspiracy for the election - it's simply the news, and they're reporting it.

12. Of course
That is the only Bush can win. If the focus is on things like jobs and health care, people will see him for the fraud that he is.

Instead, they will spend all of this time playing into people's fear of homosexuals, all the while not even mentioning that it is a civil rights issue.
