A letter from Dean
This year did not turn out like we planned. But you should be proud of what we accomplished together. Let me remind you that...

A year ago Bush was considered invincible -- his arrogance was boundless. He alienated long-time foreign allies and bullied both Republicans and Democrats in Congress. Few would risk challenging a President with such high approval ratings.

The Bush agenda was becoming the Democratic agenda and the traditional ideals and values of our party were becoming obsolete.

The way to stop Bush is the same way you stop any bully -- you stand up to him! I stood up against Bush on Iraq and again on education and again on tax cuts. I offered Americans a clear choice on the issues.

My message became a movement that initiated new people into political activism, welcomed back those who had left and ultimately reinvigorated the Democratic Party. Over 640,000 people joined my campaign to take our country back.

And we must take our country back. We have just begun to change politics as we know it. Together, we will continue this movement. Many of you have sent in ideas for future activities and as I read more and more of them, I see that our new organization has a bright future to affect change at all levels of our political process.

You helped to create this powerful grassroots movement that captured the imagination of the whole country. We wanted Bush out of the White House and today Bush's re-election is in serious doubt.

What we accomplished together will last beyond a single campaign. We created a movement that reenergized the electoral process and returned political power to individuals.

We fought the good fight together. I will always remember your help and we will keep fighting together.

But before we can take the next step, we must ensure that Dean for America has the funds to shutdown its operation in a professional manner. As of today there is a $400,000 debt owed by the Dean for America campaign for expenses incurred in the last thirty days. Most of these expenses are to small-businessmen, printers who created brochures, yard signs and stationery, family restaurants who provided gallons of coffee and thousands of doughnuts for volunteers, and local merchants who provided buses, microphones and staging equipment.

When these things were ordered we thought we could win key early contests and use the momentum to secure more victories in other states.

But things did not go as we had hoped, creating a deficit in the financial resources we were counting on. Now we are scrambling to retire this debt quickly.

Can you help by making a small contribution today? I won't suggest a specific amount: $250, $100 or even $50 would be appreciated.

If you can, please go to www.DeanforAmerica.com/debtreduction to make a contribution today.

This debt is a huge concern to me. I need the help of good friends like you now.

Our movement will continue. Although I am not yet sure in what form, I promise that you will be the first to know. You have made this all possible and together we will continue the change we have already ignited not just in the Democratic Party, but in the American political process. You are someone I want on my side. I hope you will be there.

Thank you,
Governor Howard Dean M.D.

2. Looks like both grassroots groups will be around for awhile, good.
Clark's debt is almost paid off, won't take Dean long.

It will be interesting to see what the two groups do. There is a lot of potential for good from them.

7. I got it too...
I am writing you because you have been a good and loyal friend and I need to tell you personally of the decision to withdraw my name from the 2004 Democratic Presidential Nomination Process.

This race is over for me.

I also sent some funds.

I'm sure you'll be pleased with whatever direction Dean takes from here. He's definitely commmitted, and I'll bet he has as bad a taste in his mouth re the DLC as most of the rest of us do. ;-)

I don't know who's more pathetic, dean for asking or the goofs that keep sending it in. LOL

15. I never liked Dean as a candidate, but he's clearly a good man
Good letter. I'll send him some cash.

It is senseless to pile on at this point. And I have piled on.

16. you better hope folks like to give cash...
the current front runner had $7.1 million in debt at the beginning of February....if the people don't pay that debt off, interest groups will...

Whose strings do you want attached to Kerry, the people or business as usual...

PS: what have you done for your candidate? Since giving cash seems to be such a low thing to do....I hope you are not their good will ambasador...

17. of course... most campaigns (congressional and on up)
have to do debt relief fundraising (after it wraps up, win or lose). Didn't know that til I did a gig with a dem campaign consulting firm back in the mid eighties.

Not unique to Dean.

20. Pathetic?
yeah, like people who don't know how campaigns work.

I will send Dean some money to retire his debt.

But Kerry will not get a fucking penny, and I will make sure their campaign knows it because of goofs/supporters who pile on.

18. "Edwards, Kerry Were Barely Solvent Last Month" WP
Not just Dean. Not by a long shot. He did enough to get the truth out in the public about the Iraq lies and the deficit and the Medicare bill and its faults....that we intend to donate toward the campaign debt. Will others do the same for their candidates?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A60693-2004Feb21.html
SNIP...."New campaign finance reports show that the two leading candidates for the Democratic nomination were barely solvent at the end of January heading into a prospective $50 million-plus ad blitz by President Bush.

Bush ended January with $104.4 million in the bank, nearly 100 times as much as the net balances of Sen. John F. Kerry (Mass.), the Democratic front-runner, and Sen. John Edwards (N.C.), Kerry's leading challenger for the nomination.

"We will never catch up," said Michael Meehan, Kerry's spokesman, noting that so far in February, Kerry had raised 5 million.

Kerry reported yesterday that, after winning the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary, he had $2.1 million in the bank and debt of $7.2 million at the end of January. Most of the debt was a $6.4 million loan he made to his own campaign.

This left the Kerry camp $5.1 million in the red. Using a more favorable view by disregarding Kerry's loan, which he may have to convert into a contribution, Kerry ended the month with a net balance of $1.2 million.

Edwards was in an even more fragile position than Kerry at the end of January, with $501,164 in the bank and debts of $382,667, for a net balance of $118,497......"END SNIPS

Isn't that what Trippi made in a month? Dean seems like a sincere guy, but he trusted people he shouldn't have.
