I just voted for Howard Dean!
Utah Primary seems to have an amazing turn out, possibly 100 or so people at my library when I was there and it was about a 15 minute wait to get into the main voting room. I cast my vote for Dean, so did my mother. That makes at least 2 Dean votes from the state of Utah.

To me it was a sad day. :( Striking that 'X' for Dean made me think of what could have been.

On my way out I saw a Dean bumpersticker. Hope they too are voting for Dean.

Excuse me. It is an oportunity to keep the pressure on
the major candidates to keep speaking like Dean until the election.
Otherwise it may simply settle back to the old stale retoric of the sad and depressed Democratic party.

10. It would make more sense to vote for someone who has a shot.
Just like the people who voted for Nader in 2000. They were wasted votes...hell, they helped Dubya get elected.

I'm afraid that's what's going to happen in the election. People will write in Dean's name...wasting their vote, and thus allowing Bush to get (re)elected.

I'm sure Dr. Dean wouldn't want that to happen...

Dean asked his supporters to continue to vote for him the primary.
To give him delegates to send to the convention in July.

49. I don't think all of his supporters knew that . . .
There was a girl sitting close by who looked up from her ballot to incredulously exclaim to me,"Dean is still on the ballot!?". I had heard that he was still on other ballots but I didn't know whether he would be on the Utah ballot or not. I told her she should vote her heart and if she was a Dean supporter, she should vote for Dean. She said, "No, that would be a waste of a vote.". I told her that Kucinich was most like Dean but I don't know who she ended up voting for. I wanted to tell her that Dean was still running but I wasn't positive about that so I didn't. Another guy there voted for Kerry. He was black . . . the only black guy in the Orem City Library. His decision had to do with his brother having fought in the war. (Either Viet Nam or Afghanistan. I'm not sure which.) He seemed pretty passionate about his vote and his eyes welled up with pride for having voted for Kerry 'the veteran'. I saw people coming out and voting who had previously voted republican. I overheard the lady at the ballot table explaining to this one guy that he was more than welcome to vote in the democratic primary. She explained to him that by voting in the dem primary he wouldn't be able to vote in the republican primary. He was fine with that and sat down to fill out his information and get a ballot. There was a huge turnout where I went to vote. My father made it out to vote . . . for Kucinich. My vote went to Kucinich as well.

That pretty much sums up my personal experience with today's (yesterday's) Utah democratic primary.

29. that is why there is such a big difference between primary and general
election. A vote for Dean, Clark, Gephardt, Joe, or Carol... in the primary, has no impact on bush's election... unless the voter was prone to vote for bush in the first place.

(unless he picks Edwards as his VP) is like voting for Bush in Nov - you'll see I'm right in Nov. Of course, they'll probably just blame the loss on Dean and Nader... everyone and everything but the real problem,

It's simple logic. The guy will never get in. What's the point?

Yes, I think Kucinich would make the best president. But we all have to be realistic here. You need a certain of number of delegates to get the nomination. Let's face it. Kucinich, Dean, and Sharpton are not going to get those delegates.

Dean is done. Dean is not getting the nomination. Dean is not going to be president.

Can we end the "Dean for President" posts now?

Edited on Tue Feb-24-04 06:38 PM by 56kid
then why not vote for Dean or Kucinich?

If I have a preference between Kerry and Edwards, even if I supported Dean or Kucinich more, your point would make sense.

Mine wasn't only a Dean for President post by the way.
Guess that Dean avatar made you think so, but I also mentioned Kucinich.

on edit-- I really don't understand this tendency on the part of some to say things like "can we end the (fill in the blank) for president posts"

at least on a Discussion board

63. no need for sadness
in a primary it makes every sense to vote your heart..the primary, unlike the general, is not a all or nothing...if dean get 15% or more of the vote in any state he gets delegates and in the primary process that is the name of the game...whether he 'wins' or not ( and right now it looks like he won't ) he may get enough delegates to be a very strong influence at the convention making it impossible for the nominee to ignore the issues that are important to us....on the contrary, it makes no sense to vote for anyone other than who best represents your point of view on the issues and anyone who tells you otherwise is just plain wrong

I couldn't pass up on the chance to cast a vote for Dean. He was on the ballot, so I needed to vote for him. For a little over a year I've been waiting to vote for Dean in the primary, today was that day.

I've never voted in a presidential election, been too young. This by far though is my proudest vote EVER.

45. Not trying to be mean. The OP has made no secret of his dislike for JK
I was just pleasantly surprised that he'd help him win the nomination by depriving a vote from the only guy that can stop him.

I believe there is more to voting than just "chosing a candidate and voting for her or him." Votes, especially votes for proplr who have no shot at winning, always have multiple consequences. In this case it appears that the primary effect of a vote for a guy who won't pick up delegates is nearly identical to to a vote for the candidate the poster doen't like.

Voting for Dean in Utah has no effect on Dean's fortunes whatsoever, but it does have an effect on Kerry's.

38. But Minnesota's is wierd this year
They use the Presidential Preference ballot taken at the caucuses to determine the number of delegates that go to national. Usually they just go by the caucus counts, but they're shaking it up this year.

Basically, what we get is a primary, with a caucus afterward to pick delegates for the county unit convention. The "primary" is only used to apportion state-level delegates, however, and doesn't have anything to do with the county unit or congressional dist. conventions.

Can you say f***ed up? Yeah, it makes almost no sense whatsoever, especially since the previous method seemed to work okay, IMHO.

So, you can still vote your choice on the ballot, even if you don't have enough caucusgoers for a viable subcaucus. So you can still vote for Dean, even if you don't get any Dean delegates to go on to the next level.

IOW, vote for Dean if that's where your heart is. There's no reason not to, especially in the primaries!

:D

69. Better not have the American Flag on the website either then.
Bush has hi-jacked that symbol of freedom and made it into a totalitarian dictatorship image. About the same as Stalin as I recall. Well, might as well do away with all the avatars, as they'll only "offend" someone. Get a clue, the Hammer and Sickle was abused as much as the Stars and Stripes is today. I've got nothing against the image, I'm proud of what the honest people who tried to implement something against the evils of capitalism attempted. Too bad it got run over by power hungry war-mongerers...now where does that sound familiar???

61. Congrats, Sean, for voting your conscience

Also, congrats on your first(!) presidential vote.

If you think this was fun, wait 'till November, when you will hopefully hear George W. Bush's concession speech. What a night THAT will be...

(thanks to you, in part)

62. Apparently you weren't the only one.
Dean got 11% in Idaho and 9% in Hawaii. That's awesome. I'm glad to see his supporters sticking with him. They earned the right to vote for Dean
