Does Anyone Know How Many State Legislatures Are Controlled By Dems?
This is the all-important question concerning a constitutional ammendment banning gay marriage.

It'll definately pass in the House, possibly the Senate, but I believe (if I remember Politics 101 correctly) that 2/3 of state legislatures around the nation have to approve it.

Does anyone know how many state legislatures are controlled by Democrats?

1. Illinois' is!
Both houses, plus we have the Governor and the state Supreme court.

This will NOT be a 'Bush-friendly' state this year.

3. 17 by Democrats
21 by Republicans, and 11 are split. Nebraska's unicameral legislature is non-partisan.

7. I wonder how they categorize New Jersey?
Dem Assembly, a tie in the State Senate with no tie breaking procedure. In fact the Senate has 2 Co-Presidents, one a Dem and the other a Republican.

4. It's a minority of them.
They even have fewer seats nation wide by a large margin. We got waxed on this front in 2002.

8. You're Presuming Tennessee Democratic Majority is not
right-wing, Christian, fundamentalist.

I'm sorry to say that they would probably gladly vote for the amendment and use it as a campaign issue.

10. Actually, 3/4 of the states need to ratify it
But first, a 2/3 majority is required in both houses. Do you really think it will pass so easily?

Here's the text of Article 5:

The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress; Provided that no Amendment which may be made prior to the Year One thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any Manner affect the first and fourth Clauses in the Ninth Section of the first Article; and that no State, without its Consent, shall be deprived of its equal Suffrage in the Senate.

And here's a description of the process in plain English:

11. Arkansas: Senate - 27D, 8R House - 70D, 30R

I'm telling ya. This Southern state should not be written off by Democrats. In the federal legislature, we have 5D and 1R.

Edit: I forgot to add our "esteemed" governor - Republican Mike Huckabee. ugh!
