Kucinich Focuses on Oft-Ignored Hawaii

Here's to a good night for Dennis Tuesday night!

:toast:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A579-2004Feb23.html

No other Democratic presidential candidate bothered to campaign in Hawaii, but Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (Ohio) came for the second time Sunday, confident that Tuesday night's caucuses will be his strongest showing so far.

That is not a high bar for Kucinich, as his best finish to date was the 16 percent he won in Maine's caucuses. But Hawaii's low-key caucuses, typically attracting 3,000 or so participants, offer a better chance for a long shot with an energetic organizing team to compete with the front-runners.

"Don't ever sell yourself short with the power that you have. Tuesday is your turn," Kucinich told about 50 supporters who gathered at the University of Hawaii in West Oahu. "People are looking for a new direction. This race is far from over. Now, granted, I'm back in the pack, but so was Seabiscuit."

19. The camera caught some of
what you get in person. It is a great photo.

Dennis has been to Hawaii more often in this campaign than I've been in my 43 years; just, about 5 years ago. Kauai.

I'm eagerly anticipating the results!

8. Actually many of the imperial lands have delegates
AMERICAN SAMOA, with 6 delegate votes, will have 12 delegates.
6 at-large pledged delegates each cast ½ (or .5) vote for a total of 3 votes;
2 unpledged delegates (Governor and Democratic Member of Congress) each cast 1 vote for a total of 2 votes;
4 unpledged Democratic National Committee members each cast ¼ (or .25) vote for a total of 1 vote.
GUAM, with 6 delegate votes, will have 12 delegates
6 at-large pledged delegates each cast ½ (or .5) vote for a total of 3 votes;
2 unpledged delegates (Governor and Democratic Member of Congress) each cast 1 vote for a total of 2 votes;
4 unpledged Democratic National Committee members each cast ¼ (or .25) vote for a total of 1 vote.
VIRGIN ISLANDS, with 6 delegate votes, will have 12 delegates

DEMOCRATS ABROAD, with 9 delegate votes, will have 22 delegates. The makeup of the DEMOCRATS ABROAD delegation will be:

13. This site has a ton of info on delegates

Most amusing that Puerto Rico has more delegates than many states.

10. Patsy Mink
" My dive into media coverage on war, protests and the muddy state of the real people's home front was interrupted this weekend by a news flash that Rep. Patsy Mink, D-Hawaii, the first Asian-American woman and the first woman of color to be elected to Congress, was dead. She is definitely an American hero for the times in which we live."

Miss you Patsy!

16. Oh Patsy, where are you?
Edited on Tue Feb-24-04 03:29 AM by La_Serpiente
It was the saddest thing when she died. She was a true blue liberal, the old style kind. Pro-Civil Rights, Probably in line with Kucinich's stance on foreign policy, and she was the one who spearheaded Title IX for collegiate women's sports.

A true feminist indeed. In 2002, she was awarded with NOW's Woman of Vision Award. She is only one of TWO women to win such an award.

Patsy Mink, you will always be in our hearts.

O8)

I really cried when she died. We lost a progressive voice that day.

17. Kucinich Supporters
You just might be able to pull a win in HI. According to the state democratic chairman, with a contestant from Hawaii on American Idol tonight, he's expecting a lot of people to stay home. Crank up the turnout!

20. If Dennis Wins Hawaii, he'll finally get the attention he deserves
Even a caucus as small as HI would raise enough eyebrows that people may actually start LISTENING to the weird little Congressman from Ohio with the funny name.
