When I look at a candidate, I do not worry over what they would go in an "ohmygodwhatthefuckarewegonnado!?" situation. Why? Because the odds of such a situation arising are pretty close to one in a million. I worry about what a candidate will do in the vast majority of their term, which surprisingly, is guaranteed to be pretty darn calm most of the time.

If Clinton thinks she can scare voters into her camp, she deserves every tomato she gets hit with.

The goal is to elect a Democrat instead. I still remember back in 2004 debating with folks at DU that the election would hinge on the publics evaluation of who would make the best war time President, and being told that no, the election would hinge on economic issues, and who offered a more compelling positive vision of hope for the future. My point was that all Democrats score better than all Republicans on economics and hopeful vision, so the Republicans would make national security the center piece of their campaign where they believed they could get an edge on Democrats.

At the time I was making the case for Wes Clark for VP rather than John Edwards, but that is water under the bridge now. But I was right about the focus of the 2004 election. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Democrats or the Democratic Party making a conscious effort to assure voters that we are strong and decisive enough to competently deal with whatever their worst fears are. It is just as foolish to ignore fear, as it is foolish to ignore hope. We need to be compelling about our ability to protect American's wisely with sane policies, and we need to be compelling about our ability to lead America to a brighter future. it isn't one vs the other.
