In Iowa, foreign policy means security

By Ed Stoddard 1 hour, 48 minutes ago

OTTUMWA, Iowa (Reuters) - In the snowswept American heartland, discussion of foreign policy often boils down to one word: security.

......

Democrats also expressed concern, with some audience members quizzing Sen. Barack Obama about his views how to best handle the upheaval in Pakistan, while others wanted to discuss trade with China and diplomacy in the Middle East.

..............

Beth Stelle Jones, 53, a pre-school Iowa teacher who supports Republican candidate John McCain, said she was impressed with the Arizona Senator's grasp of the political situation in Pakistan, which he discussed on Thursday at a campaign rally in Des Moines shortly after Bhutto's slaying.

............

"I'm voting for Mike Huckabee because I think he's the most godly of the candidates. I know foreign policy is important but I know little about it," he said when asked for his views on the subject.

1. I'm sorry, but what the hell is "godly"?

2. Perhaps at a minimum it means not mocking believers with FSM posts and letters to the editor -

but then it probably also means having a set of beliefs closest to the speaker - and that point appears to outway any policy plans or management ability. The latter, having beliefs in God, or beliefs in no god that are closest to your own, does not seem to be high on the list for most political posts on DU.

5. actually that is a legitimate question to ask in the context it was used.
Ly added to anything merely is a shortcut of -like. Godly is same as god-like. But who's god? What attributes of a specific god is the speaker referring to? After all there are gods and there are gods, and some are actually the antithesis of other gods, so it is perfectly proper to ask just what the hell is 'godly' when applied to a political candidate.

6. Thanks.
I brought it up for that kind of analysis. I probably should have left out the emotionally charging "what the hell".
