US May Intervene In Investigation Of Bhutto's Assassination

Mr. Musharraf and his supporters in the Bush administration, meanwhile, were coming under increasing pressure, inside and outside Pakistan, to open up the inquiry. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Democrat of New York, said Friday that the United States should call for an independent investigation.

"I don't think the Pakistani government at this time under President Musharraf has any credibility at all," she told CNN in an interview. She suggested an investigation along the lines of the ongoing international inquiry into the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri.

State Department officials said they had no plans for the moment to join the investigation. But a senior Bush administration official said, "There's a growing sense that we're going to have to work on the investigation in some way, that it can't just be a Pakistani investigation."

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the issue, said that administration officials were concerned that "there's so much distrust" of the Musharraf government among Pakistanis that outside nations may have to join the investigation to give the findings any credibility. A second administration official said the idea of an independent international investigation had been proposed by "a number of people, and is certainly something that hasn't been ruled out." But, he added, no decision had been made.

1. In no way do I intend disrespect for my own country but unfortunately
the people of Pakistan will be just as suspicious of a US Investigation.

It might be wiser that we push for an international group investigate.

3. International investigation sounds better to me.
Bushco would want to push their own story.

4. The first piece of advice this

administration will give is to time the investigation properly. And that means that they will have to find the Pakistani equivalent of Britney Spears having a nervous breakdown. The second thing is to appoint a fair and impartial head of the investigation, preferably a relative of a person who was directly involved in whatever it is that is being investigated. Next, when the political opposition demands public hearing and records, tell them - in the interests of national security - to go fuck themselves and then make them apologize for dishonoring something or other. Finally start a fire or erase the tapes. And that is how you have an investigation.

5. It Should (Not) Be Done By The US
That's strikingly paternaliatic...

However there should be an independent organization preferably by a international organization...

8. What?
Anyone who would let the corrupt Bush administration near anything that matters has to have rocks in his or her head. I surely don't trust Musharraf to investigate how Bhutto was killed, and allowing him to collude with the bloodthirsty Bush administration would ensure that nothing would ever be settled about this.

Bad idea. Very bad idea.
