Edwards: Rallying the Middle Class-
John Edwards writes in today's Boston Globe:

I grew up in a small, rural town, and my parents didn't have a lot of money. My mother worked at the post office and my father earned his living in a textile mill. They worked hard to provide a better life for their children, and they taught me to believe that somebody from a little town in North Carolina could do just about anything if he worked hard and played by the rules.

I am running for president to make sure that every child can have the same opportunities in life that I've had. That's the great promise of America - no matter the circumstances you were born into, if you work hard and do what's right, you'll be able to build a better life for yourself and your family.

But today, the promise of America is being threatened by lobbyists and their corporate clients who have taken over our government and sold out the middle class. Middle-class incomes have stagnated for the past seven years, and families across the country are working harder than ever but are still struggling to cover the rising costs of healthcare, education, and transportation. The truth is that our economy is only growing at the top.

How long will we let big corporations and special interests dictate the direction of our country, while middle-class Americans suffer? America needs a president who will take on these powers and fight to reclaim our country. That's why I have proposed a four-part Middle Class Rising agenda to make sure that all Americans have a fair shot at the American dream.

The first thing we need to do is create more jobs and make sure those jobs pay enough for people to get ahead. As president, I will end the failed NAFTA trade model and pursue a trade policy that ends tax loopholes for companies that send American jobs overseas. I will also invest in renewable sources of energy to create new industries and good-paying jobs. I will make sure work pays by raising the minimum wage to $9.50 an hour, and I will build career ladders to help low-wage workers move into better jobs. I will put the government back on the side of working people by strengthening organized labor. And finally, I will reform our tax code to make sure that the people who need tax breaks - our middle-class families - are the ones getting them.

The second thing we need to do is give families the tools to build a secure financial future. In today's economy, people cannot rely on their employers for their long-term retirement security, so as president I will create Universal Retirement Accounts that can be taken from job to job. To respond to the mortgage crisis, I will pass a tough new national law to prevent predatory lending abuses, and I will rein in credit card and other abusive lending practices by creating a new consumer watchdog agency.

The third thing we need to do is remove the burdens that weigh families down. We need to help people balance their work and home lives by making sure that workplace policies keep up with changes in the economy. As president, I will expand early-education programs, provide paid leave and sick leave to all workers, and expand job protection under the Family and Medical Leave Act. I will also expand opportunities to attend college through my "College for Everyone" program.

The fourth thing we need to do is create universal healthcare in America. Not only are healthcare costs putting a huge strain on American families and our competitiveness in the global economy, but our broken healthcare system that leaves 47 million Americans without healthcare is also a moral disgrace. I have proposed a healthcare plan that calls for shared responsibility among people, businesses, and the government, and will ensure that every man, woman, and child in America has access to affordable, quality coverage.

Our country faces huge challenges. But the great thing about the American people is that they have the strength and courage to rise up and bring about the change our country needs - just as they have over and over again in our nation's history. I know if we rise to the challenge - together - we can restore the promise of America and meet the great moral test of our generation: to ensure we leave America better than we found it.

He couldn't possibly have voted for it.

Thank you, Rocky, for taking the high road on DU (with just the occasional lapse).

Given all the passion and devotion you have for your candidate, that's no small feat.

Your class far exceeds "middle."

14. We need to restore the middle class
The decline of this great country has everything to do with the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.

I heard today that the CEO of United Health wants the courts to free up his stock options so he can cash in while his case in in court. And to think that so many people are without health care or going into bankruptcy because of medical bills while he tries to claim that he deserves his megamillions every year! It disgusts me!

25. Any details on the universal retirement account business? Is this in addition
to social security - or does this require phasing out SS? What is the difference between URA's (universal retirement accounts) and 401k's, IRA's and the like? Government sponsorship?

No mention that providing health care is a huge expense for businesses. I have never been able to see why more business lobbyists are not on board with some kind of universal health care program - it would go directly into improving their bottom line. Come to think of it, not being required to provide a retirement program would help as well.

27. in *addition* to Social Security - more info here
Edited on Sat Dec-29-07 01:11 PM by spooky3
http://www.johnedwards.com/issues/seniors/20071215-declaration-of-independence/index.html

"Edwards is committed to protecting Social Security, because there is no more important retirement program in the country. He has strongly opposed President Bush's efforts to privatize it, which would cut guaranteed benefits and risk individuals' retirements in the stock market. He does not believe we need to reduce benefits, change the retirement age or increase the burden on average workers. Edwards has proposed changing the Social Security tax exemption for individuals making more than $200,000 a year, who now pay Social Security on less than half of their income violating the fundamental principles of fairness under our progressive tax system. He also supports a nonpartisan, non-ideological commission to examine ways of ensuring that every American can retire with dignity and that the life of the Trust Fund is extended...

"Employees who have worked hard all their lives should not be denied the pension benefits they have earned, and corporations must honor the pension promises they've made to workers. Edwards opposes allowing companies to either switch out of defined-benefit plans in order to deny long-term workers their pensions, or go into bankruptcy just to avoid keeping their promises to employees. Edwards will give workers claims for lost pensions just like for lost wages, prevent corporate executives from walking away with millions while companies are going bankrupt and reform the bankruptcy laws to prevent companies from shedding their obligations to workers. At the same time, because nearly half of working Americans do not own any type of personal retirement account, Edwards has proposed a series of initiatives to help millions of families better realize financial security and retire with dignity, including:

* New universal retirement accounts requiring every business to automatically enroll its workers in at least one plan: either a traditional pension, a 401(k), or an IRA – workers will be allowed to build up these accounts over the course of their careers and take them from job to job;..."

My comments:

Private employers are currently not required to establish private deferred compensation programs (other than Social Security). Only about half of the private sector workforce is covered by a private DC program. And many employers have been terminating defined benefit programs (which are generally better for workers than defined contribution), citing "costs" while paying more and more in top management compensation and benefits.

Under current law 401k, employer contributions can be forfeited partially or wholly before 6 years of service, depending on the vesting schedule the employer has adopted (employee contributions must always be 100% vested). In a few cases, def. benefit plans have been grossly underfunded and then long term employees' pensions are cut (e.g., in the airline industry). There is a govt. insurance system (PBGC) for DB plans but it covers only a portion of the lost benefits.

In one sense, not providing retirement programs simply externalizes a business's costs onto the rest of society. Currently taxpayers subsidize the provision of retirement, since all employer costs can be deducted as compensation as long as the plan is qualified, but employees don't include distributions (and gains over the years) into income until they are actually received. The taxpayers make up the difference in what the govt needs to operate given this tax break to one segment of society. And employers who don't provide retirement plans are relying on workers and society to take care of the retirement income needs of workers. So the key question is not whether these benefits should be provided but rather, when are they earned, and who pays?

I completely agree that bus. lobbyists ought to get on bd. with universal health care, and some have. Part of the reason why providing health care is expensive (US has the highest or nearly the highest per capital HC costs, but ranks only in the top 30 in health care quality or outcome measures) is that pharmaceutical companies charge Americans much more than people in Western Europe and Canada for the same drugs. Big pharma is one of the most profitable industries in the world, a big recipient of corporate welfare (e.g., a lot of drug research is sponsored or conducted by the Fed. govt.), and its execs. receive pay ranking in the top 10 of all industries. Insurance companies also have an inducement not to cover claims, since it increases their profitability. So it is entirely possible that restructuring the system (based on what we have learned from other countries) would reduce businesses' costs.

33. GO John - THANKS Rock
We may well be at the most critical crossroads since Lincoln's term. We can refelct and compare JRE with other Presidents and course changings in US history since Lincoln's tenure, but while the horse swaps were driven by wars or economic disaster, the transfer of the coming elections will possibly doom our democracy (or what's left of it) or thrust it's ideals to new heights.
If the Chickenhawks prevail, they'll act in concert with their cousins, the vultures, to pick the remaining morsels of meat off the bones of what once was a thriving general populace. And of course, to finish off the carcass, they'll keep telling the skeletal remains to just lie still and everything will turn out dandy. :nuke:
The alternative is for John Edwards to be handed the keys to the oval office so he can initiate the trek towards giving the country back to those it belongs to. He says he'll do that and he's the only one saying such, flat out. I believe he's as sincere as sincere can be. I don't pray, but I do hope to hell he influences the fine folks of Iowa the same way he works on me and most of the rest of my friends and family.
