Yikes!!! Hillary Clinton political ad up here in NH...
I admit that I don't watch the local channels here very often but tonight there was a HC ad on Channel 9 that just floored me: it is a shot of here sitting next to a Christmas tree with lots of wrapped presents around here and she's saying something like "Now where did I put that Universal Pre-K". She's got a big smile on her face and finally finds the present that has "Universal Pre-K" on it.

At first I really thought it was a parody of her and then I realized it was for real. My very first thought was...we are not talking Christmas gifts here, we're talking basic rights...I'm not electing Santa Claus here...I really thought this ad was gross and demeaning. I'm not quite sure why I had this viseral reaction...??? Somehow I felt diminished by it, like someone was handing me something I didn't deserve.

1. I just saw it too, I thought it was cute enough . . .
but there you have it. And she is certainly not even in my top three as far as candidates are concerned.

I guess I thought it was OK in comparison with Huckabee's "Jesus is the reason for the season" ad, that one was revolting.

2. It Would Make Me Wince, Ma'am
So it is probably pretty good for its target audience.

A salesman of my acquaintance years ago would run pitches at me, and knew if he got me to groan he had a winner....

3. It's here in Iowa too
I haven't personally seen it.....but I've had two people ask me if I had. They had a reaction similar to yours....but in fairness neither of them support Clinton.

6. Well, also in fairness, I'm going to vote for Edwards but if
Hillary is the nominee, I'll vote for her...I certainly don't hate her as some do here on DU, I just wonder where they come up with ads like this...prople up here in NH are likely to say "don't do me any favors"...I guess it just seemed condescending to me.

why that would matter?

5. I just heard an NPR piece on the candidates' Christmas ads. The person
generally didn't like the idea of them commercializing Christmas even MORE than it already has been.

He said they will all have a Christmas Day moratorium, though, but expect them to be back on the air Wednesday!

9. I thought it was a cute ad
Edited on Mon Dec-24-07 06:26 PM by ElizabethDC
I don't think they were any intended undertones to it, they were just trying to do something clever for Christmas by somehow showing the candidate in a holiday setting and also discussing the issues. I mean, if you think about it too hard, there are a number of things wrong with the ad - who writes what the present is on the outside of the box, anyway?

11. We have a winner!!! The clear moment of zen for this thread:
who writes what the president is on the outside of the box, anyway?

Nobody, unfortunately. ;)

15. I know, it was just zen. I'm wishing now that we could return presidents once unwrapped.
If we didn't like them...It would make a lot of things easier.

16. The only candidate Christmas ad I've liked is so far is Obama's
It's the only one that hasn't sounded to me like it was pandering to any particular audience. Being right next door to NH, we see a lot of the NH political ads in the Boston TV market.

19. You're not alone...the ad has been widely panned for that reason
Major ego trip..."I'm giving gifts!" As if we didn't/don't pay for these things in the first place.

21. Exactly. She's "giving us gifts" that are payed for with OUR money!
Obama's ad was by FAR the best, most genuine ad. Why didn't Edwards have his family in his ad? Obama's wife and kids all sitting together and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday with his big smile at the end is the best. No contest.

22. Obama sent a tasteful, nonpartisan Christmas message, no politics included
which was just common sense...no wonder he drives so many people crazy.

28. Unfortunately that is the challenge of doing political ads during Christmas season
I saw the ad and (like Cokie Roberts explained), it played on the mother looking for stuff last minute to make for a happy home schtick, but thanks to the unfortunate frontloading of the primary season that starts two weeks earlier into Chirstmas season, the challenge is to come up with clever political ads that are "seasonal", yet point out differences in the candidate.

Sure, Hillary looks like she is handing out "gifts" that shouldn't be "gifts", but it's a formula devised in the ad. I'm sure they focus-grouped the crap out of it and went with their results.

I'm sure there is more to come...
