The woman who most deserved to become our first woman president
Edited on Sun Dec-23-07 08:30 AM by Skidmore
passed from us all too soon, and we could have used her superior sense of patriotic duty, morality, and governance now more than in the days of Watergate. The great Barbara Jordan was a woman of excellent intellect and boundless courage who addressed the concerns of the nation with honor, dignity, and spared no words or sensitivities in speaking truth. She is my standard for judging the mettle of women presenting themselves as candidates for office. I have not yet found her equal among us.

2. And she hailed from the great state of TEXAS!
We must remember GEORGIE BOY is NOT a Texan!

Texans have been, historically, Democrats. I keep trying to tell people this. We produced the likes of Molly Ivins and Barbara Jordan. They are the treasured daughters of this great state! And we ARE, in our hearts, Democrats!

10. So did I: she was on my very short list of great living American heroes from the day I first laid
eyes upon her.

5. I agree wholeheartedly....
Barbara Jordan should have risen to be a giant on the American political scene, but her body betrayed her and she slipped away. Her passing is still a stinging loss to many of us in Texas.

When I was visiting the Texas State Cemetery, the place reserved for the leaders of Texas, I sought out her plot and stood there in reverant silence.

6. When she spoke about the Constitution
during the Watergate hearings it was like listening to the voice of God. She would NEVER have said "Impeachment was off the table"

18. Man or woman, few measure up to her
I fear you're presenting an unfair standard. Who today even comes close?

19. I don't think that people even try to measure up to high standards
for personal excellence today. They sell out, and by in large, treat integrity as a commodity. It is a fair standard to expect people to live up to the best of our expectations and hopes.

22. I understand the spirit of this being said about Barbara Jordan, but frankly......
...no one, but no one DESERVES to become president. They have to earn it.

Again, no offense intended.

24. She was deserving. The woman did more to earn the distinction of
the office than most of those who have sought it.

26. And Elizabeth Holtzman, from the same House Judiciary Committee, was
another heroine of the Watergate years.

She ran for Senate against Alphonse D'Amato, having won the Democratic endorsement, but Jacob Javits, who thought that the job belonged to him, despite the fact that he was dying of ALS, ran as an Independent and took away enough votes to put D'Amato in office.

28. I don't have to wonder
if she would have helped to move the effort to impeach forward.

Thank you for remembering her; she, too, would have been a worthy "first woman president."
