Is John Edwards the Energizer Bunny of 2008?

I'm fascinated how, amid the Punch n' Judy show of "Hillary's people said this about Obama" and "Oprah said this about Obama" and "Bill said this about Hillary," John Edwards still remains so firmly in the race. It's pretty stunning. He just keeps going and going and going.

It gives me this weird feeling that maybe the people of Iowa are ignoring the hysteria and possibly even listening to the candidates on the issues. Oddly enough, it seems they might be taking their civic role seriously, despite the sudden arrival of Magic Johnson and Chuck Norris in their midst. I don't know how they do it, I couldn't. I'm too big a Walker Texas Ranger fan. But the people of Iowa seem to be different.

It's possible they've noticed that Edwards is the one candidate talking about the hardships being faced by our disappearing middle class. Maybe they've caught on to the fact that he's the one person with a realistic plan for health care and a realistic approach for addressing climate change. Maybe minorities and working women have even noticed that, surprisingly enough, he's the candidate who is speaking loudest and most forcefully about the bread and butter economic issues that actually affect them.

I have to admit that I came to Edwards filled with skepticism, just like I first looked to Obama with hope. But the more I watch them wrestle with the critical issues of our times, and the more I listen for the notes of plain truth buried beneath the bullet points and the polished rhetoric, the more I get the feeling that Edwards is the most capable candidate out there.

In terms of historical precedent, I would certainly prefer it if he was an African American woman of Hispanic descent, but as they say, nobody's perfect.

standing in the long Supermarket line, I had the occasion to read the Enquirer story. Not that I wish it on him, but the Enquirer is standing by their story. If true, you have to admit, Edwards is finished. There was a pic of the mistress and her name is revealed in the centerfold of the paper. I feel badly for Elizabeth.

Tomorrow is Christmas, and across America, families will be transporting children to and from the homes of the father and step-mother and mother and step-father. Some lucky families will simplify the whole complicated scenario by simply meeting at some point in one home or the other to celebrate Christmas together. If you have a traditional family with one dad and one mom, you may or may not be luckier than families in which there may be several step-parents all vying for a little prime time with the kids.

If this were an issue, Edwards would be responding to it. If he isn't responding to it, it is because if he did he would be accused of invading the privacy of the Young family and of the woman who is pregnant. The Enquirer knows that the story is a lot of to do over nothing. The Enquirer is owned by a Friend of Hillary. 'Nuff said.

As to Obama, I try not to comment much there or Clinton threads. The fierce back and forth I see there really turns me off. I check in to see what's being said, but I rarely post, so I didn't see you. As to Edwards, I see certain names over and over and know the regulars.

But I will say this, I am seeing many more names these days, so I'll be looking for you again. And as Edwards just said on C-Span... vote for him and get 5 more involved!

I myself am having a lot of trouble down here in Florida... it's REALLY messed up and I live in a county that's worse than most! I will admit to being more cynical than optimistic because of where I live AND from what has happened in the WH And The Congress, Democrats included. Were it not for Edwards I would probably not even be involved this time around. I am worried about Florida (who wouldn't be) but I would have to travel to Tampa or St. Pete to even see him. I doubt he'll be coming here, rarely do ANY national candidates come here. Even Bill Clinton running for his 2nd term didn't come here, and he was popular here. I had to drive to Gainesville to see him, and that's a long haul!

They have a John Edwards group in St. Pete, but I'm no able to go there and participate. We care for my mother-in-law who has severe Alzheimer's and is 95, so time is limited.

95. Obviously, I've Heard Him Speak Many Times So A Lot Of What He

said isn't new to me, but he always makes me feel good. What I really like about his appearances is that he's willing to take questions from the audience and interacts with the group. I think that shows he's willing to be open and not afraid of what may be coming.

I will say that he looked "tired" tonight, but I'm sure he's really trying to cover a lot of ground and that would be expected.

I'll have to leave for tonight, wish I could stay and push this but my cat and I had a run in at about 5:00 AM. While I was sleeping he got a wild hair and jumped up on the bed and landed on my face. So imagine what it would be like... there was a bottle of flavored water on the stand and it spilled all over the ceramic tile floor and as I freaked out and hit the floor, the FLOOR won! 146. Well, Short Story About My... You Better Fight Back! I Come From

a family of 6 girls, which in and of itself means you have to grapple a little. But I was a real Tom-Boy back then and would roll in the dirt no matter what. I lived in Germany because my father was in the Army and there's LOTS of snow there. I had spent one afternoon after school making myself what I thought was a fantastic SNOWMAN! I fine tuned it to a fair thee well and went inside to warm up. The bus stop was really close to my house and we all huddled under some sort of shack waiting for the bus to come As we waited this boy decided he would make "fun" of MY snowman and proceeded to make steps up the side.

He had goaded me on several occasions, and this was the last straw... I went after him with a vengeance and beat the shit out of him, consequence he didn't go to school that day! The boy's father came over to our house later that night complaining about me, but MY father told him I wasn't the "bully" and if his son wasn't big enough to take on a girl, he shouldn't be crying like a baby!

The kid still tried to push the envelope at times, and I did give him a bloody nose after that... but only because he was a real pain in the ass!

I have since learned that I don't like violence and have realized there are others ways to fight back, but FIGHT BACK is what we must do! Kill 'Em With Kindness!!

I'm listening to the Weavers -- Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, Fred Hellerman, Lee Hays -- who knew Woody Guthrie and sang many of his songs. They leave out the last three verses after "wheat fields waving and dust clouds rolling" but it was the 1950s after all. The Weavers of course were blacklisted by American fascists, banned from radio and television. Ugh. Never again!

Two Americas! Fancy meeting you here. I was just over at the health insurance thread reading your take on my question:

Can one support a candidate based on the kind of following that person generates? The quality of his entourage, so to speak. For all that I remain ambivalent about John Edwards, I really do like his people -- here and elsewhere. Simple, decent, loyal and hardworking, principled... what in Yiddish is called a mensch. Also not inclined to throw mud (unless provoked).

You write that this would be your main criterion in standing with a candidate -- to first stand with his (her) people. That's good to hear. I thought I was alone in that approach.

In truth I am torn between Obama, a brilliant man who taught constitutional law at U of C, whose intellect and oratory I so admire, whose record in Illinois (my home state) has been liberal and progressive -- and Edwards, who has a simpler message but sticks to it like a dog with a bone.

It's the old head vs heart dilemma -- since Illinois will go Obama regardless, does it really matter?

I do think John Edwards is saying what needs to be said. Like a broken record, he is saying it. But for his stubborn insistence on framing the populist message, it would be business as usual for our candidates and the lobbyists who buy them. Can he live up to his own rhetoric? Has he? No. He has fallen short. How much does this matter?

Questions aside, I believe the decision has been made. Keep on hoppin', bunnies -- keep this thread alive until Jan 3rd. Bon chance!

Guthrie is a personal hero of mine

Yup. I understand... as Pete Seeger is one of my heroes. America's tuning fork, they called him.

When subpoena'd by HUAC (House UnAmerican Activities Committee) he refused to answer questions or give names, citing First Amendment rights (freedom of speech, freedom of assembly) rather than Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination. There was no censure, no sanctions, for pleading the Fifth. Seeger's lawyer advised it. But for claiming First Amendment freedoms, thus challenging HUAC's constitutionality, Seeger was indicted for contempt of Congress, tried, convicted and almost served one year in prison (overturned on a technicality).

Huh. Those were the Bad Old Days. Another folk song hero: Guy Carawan. In 1959 he gave up a singing career to settle down at Tennessee's Highlander Center (dedicated to grassroots community organizing and social justice) where he made a civil rights anthem of "We Shall Overcome" by teaching it to the kids who founded SNCC. Throughout the 1960s Carawan kept bouncing in and out of jail.

Here's a link to Carawan's recording of "Which Side Are You On," written by Florence Reece during the Appalachian coal miners' struggle to unionize during the 1930s. The battle in Harlan County was especially bloody -- joining a union could cost you your life.

If that were not true, we could not be in the crisis we are in. I think that arguing over the relative merits of the candidates is way to distance ourselves from the reality we are facing. I do wish we could actually KNOW what a candidate might become. But, heck, I can't even tell ya what I might become next year, next week... let alone some other person.

Oh, yes, I want to look at what Edwards or Biden or Kucinich or Clinton or Obama might become... rather than what they have been. I also know that the best predictor of the future is... the past. That is, we tend more often than not to repeat past patterns of behavior.

Other than that... I agree. The key questions: how did we get here, where are we going --

and since we seem headed in the wrong direction (global warming, health care crisis, income inequality, stagnant wages, shrinking middle class, a large divide between rich and poor) --

How do we turn (another Jewish concept, t'shuvah) such a huge ship so heavily freighted?

I like Edwards' idea of a Citizen Congress. Participatory democracy. If it could be implemented, then a lot of us might have a lot more impact on "where we are going."

That is from Lincoln's House Divided speech, which is especially relevant today, with "our house" being so divided.

At that time Lincoln said "We are now far into the fifth year since a policy was initiated with the avowed object, and confident promise, of putting an end to slavery agitation. Under the operation of that policy, that agitation has not only not ceased, but has constantly augmented. In my opinion, it will not cease, until a crisis shall have been reached and passed. 'A house divided against itself cannot stand.' I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved -- I do not expect the house to fall -- but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other."

We are now far into the 28th year since a policy was initiated with the avowed object and confident promise of peace and prosperity - the Great Libertarian Experiment, a radical re-making of the country according to a new and fanciful doctrine. Under the operation of that policy, peace and prosperity have not only not been achieved, but the country is worse off than it has been since the Great Depression. Now we are reaching a crisis, just as Lincoln's generation did.

The wealth was to trickle down, the doctrine of “free markets” was to lead to freedom for the people. A rising tide was going to lift all boats. “Free trade” was to bring prosperity to all. Unions were now to be seen as obsolete, and any who failed in this new free market world had only themselves to blame. With “government off of our back” we would march into a glorious new era of peace and prosperity.

The Great Libertarian Experiment has failed. It has almost destroyed the country.

I believe that this government, as Lincoln believed about the government of the 1850's, cannot endure permanently half corporate oligarchy and half democracy - half owned by corporate interests and half owned by the people. It must become all one thing, or all the other. A house divided against itself cannot stand.

We have a democracy - or we do not. Our voices, our rights, our health and well being, our votes - they count, or they do not. There can be no compromise on these without the surrender of democracy and the submission to rule by the few. Some have rights, some can be heard, some have health, and some votes count. But justice denied anywhere is justice threatened everywhere.

"Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new - North as well as South. Have we no tendency to the latter condition?"

Lincoln said about the ascendancy of the slave power and the country becoming all for slavery - "have we no tendency to the latter condition?" and I would ask today: are we to be free men living in a democracy, or mere vassals in a corporate oligarchy? Have we no tendency to the latter condition when corporate lawyers and lobbyists are actually writing our legislation - the law of the land under which we live and which we must obey? When our elected representatives are beholden to the wealthy few for their very existence as our representatives?

We can lighten the ship if we clear the decks of the clutter that is in the way, we can all lean on the tiller together. Look at the feuds and petty arguments here. One would never know the country was in a deep crisis.

What then is needed? What should we be looking for, in ourselves, in potential friends, in candidates and leaders? Glamour? Credentials? Celebrity? Prestige? Connections?

Lincoln asked this question in reference to the fight against slavery. Douglas was the more famous, the more accomplished, the more popular, the more electable. Lincoln was dismissed by many as small and unknown, as a failure and as inexperienced. Lincoln admitted that Douglas was the greater man than he.

But, Lincoln said “better a live dog than a dead lion.”

From the “House Divided” speech:

“There are those who denounce us openly to their own friends, and yet whisper us softly, that Senator Douglas is the aptest instrument there is with which to effect that object. They wish us to infer all, from the fact that he now has a little quarrel with the present head of the dynasty; and that he has regularly voted with us on a single point, upon which he and we have never differed. They remind us that he is a great man, and that the largest of us are very small ones. Let this be granted. But ‘a living dog is better than a dead lion.’ Judge Douglas, if not a dead lion, for this work, is at least a caged and toothless one. How can he oppose the advances of slavery? “

How can those who do not even claim to be taking on the growing corporate power that threatens our democracy be entrusted with the work?

Better a live dog than a dead lion.

We need courage, then, and we also need discernment as to who is and who is not a friend. We need those who care; those whose hands are free, and those whose hearts are in the work.

"Our cause, then, must be intrusted to, and conducted by, its own undoubted friends -- those whose hands are free, whose hearts are in the work - who do care for the result."

Yet we antagonize no one, and we welcome in all who wish to join us, and we have faith in the eventual result.

Rocky, IF you really wanted to do something with these bits, they could be swapped around. I did each stanza(?) as an individual piece - trying to highlight one point in it. They MIGHT be better arranged for some sort of contiuity - or not. And the parts that you and others offered earlier could be integrated as well. IF, someone wanted me to make them rhyme a bit better, I'd take a shot at it. If not, that's cool too.

253. Sorry For "Missing In Action" A Couple Of Days... But Christmas Is

hectic around here. My daughter who is a critical care nurse that works many hours, and actually DOESN'T like to cook sort of looks to me for the "dinner agenda!" Sometimes I think I would prefer working! And here it is after 1:00 PM the day after and I feel like a dish rag! Even though I got more than 6 hours of sleep last night I feel like I could take a nap!

out and talked to me and millions of others! As a long time supporter of his I've heard his positions and watched his speeches over and over! One would think I would be tired of hearing much of what he says at these rallies, but each time he gives me a feeling of optimism. As one who has just about "had it" with all that has gone on for WAAAAAAY too long, and all that I've seen that has brought America down, I'm always happy for the lift he gives me.

I know in my heart that if he isn't the nominee I will become extremely depressed and have that same sinking feeling that has been a cloud over so many of us for so long. I feel that perhaps this will be my last time being an "activist" in our political process. It has been corrupted like I've never seen. I know our history has had corruption before, but to me none that has been as devastating as what has transpired in such a short time.

As I've said almost a hundred times before, what has gone on here in America has made me very very cynical about what I feel Democracy is about. I don't think I can ever be convinced that The Idiot, Decider EVER won either election for POTUS, and living in the county that I live in, I also think we experienced even MORE fraud in 2006.

The loss of 18,000 plus votes is NOT comprehensible and even though I volunteered to help Christine Jennings in her fight to seek redemption, it has come to nothing. IMHO, our Supervisor of Elections here is almost worse than Katherine "Cruella" Harris, who I had to endure as a representative for 2 terms. And that's really quite a statement to make. Any personal contact I've had with her has ALWAYS been contentious and she's totally lacking of any warmth or caring. I'm sure it's because I have a "D" behind my name, but fairness IS NOT something she tries to achieve.

So seeing John & Elizabeth Edwards almost makes me want to "hope" again!! I don't use the word HOPE anymore, but if given a wish... my wish is that America will be able to see and understand that he wants to work FOR "we the people" and regardless of past mistakes (we've all made some bloopers) I think he DOES want a better America! And he CAN'T do it alone, and he CAN'T do it in the first 100 days... he NEEDS us to help! So if you can, PLEASE DONATE... he's trying to raise 1.5 million before January 3rd. Even though I have little to give I will do it what I can right now.

I really loved Paul Wellstone, and even though I've stated it before... he died on my birthday 5 years ago! I was mortified and will never forget! When I saw the avatar it made me think that Edwards & Wellstone would have been so great together. Also Feingold, but perhaps in the climate we find ourselves now, Wellstone & Feingold wouldn't fly! But they are two that I really respect.

However, we have JOHN EDWARDS & his message is very populist and not so "moderate" as the other two front runners! I do think he will massage his message if he should be our nominee... it will be necessary to grab many "southerners" because they seem to want someone they feel is moderate, but also ONE OF THEIR own! I feel if he's the nominee he will appeal to them much more. Many down here in the south have some very entrenched views about Clinton, even though she was the First Lady in Arkansas. I think many forget about this because she's so New York now and that's what they see.

Anyway... I'll keep watching John & Elizabeth Edwards and watch for the FIRST star each night to make my wish for them come true!

very worst statements I ever heard about him was that he should NOT BE running for President because his wife has cancer. They felt he should stay home and spend as much time with her as possible! I actually think it's helpful to BOTH of them because the focus is OFF the cancer when they're busy. She says she feels fine and is ready for the 36 hour marathon, so GOOD LUCK to them! Cancer is terrible, my mother and father-in-law both died from it. I have a niece who is around 35 and just had a double mastectomy and will be having chemo and radiation soon. It had not spread to her bones and they say they got it all, but you never know!

and I know you don't want to hear it... but the lady from Des Moines Register who does their polling says Obama widening lead over Clinton, showing Edwards in THIRD!!

What do you make of this?? The Register endorses Clinton and then seems to be pumping (pimping) Obama! A caller said it was to volatile to "call it" but she said THEIR poll in 2004 in the two day run up to the election turned out to be exactly what THEY predicted!

Yesterday I heard Obama was tanking, heard Clinton having trouble and Edwards was leading! I haven't let the polls sway me any, and mostly have ignored them all... but does ANYONE know about the Register's reliability??

Regardless, my faith in Edwards remains stronger than ever. Last night I was with about 8 people who came down her from Illinois and ALL of them said they DID NOT support Obama, but we did have an extensive discussion about Clinton. Their impression is that Clinton is the ONLY who can win, not everyone said it, but at least 5 did. I talked and talked and they agreed with many points I was raising.... however THEY are from a different part of the country, and ALL are Democrats. Actually ALL were from Chicago, and NONE like the Oprah glitz thing! I do think I scored with some and I know I left them thinking because they are undecided! They're going on a cruise so I will see them again in about 10 days and I'll talk with them again. All know how political I am and always ask my opinion, but they do AGREE with what Edwards is saying! Now, I have to convince them to VOTE for him!

An appearance last night, here at Council Bluffs HQ, had over two hindered people in this little office, and we expected 50. Remember, it was at 10pm, and it was below zero last night. Then, at another stop in Atlantic Iowa drew over 100 people to this tiny farmhouse. This is incredible people, the feeling is great, and we won't give up.
