Edwards for President by kos Mon Feb 23rd, 2004 at 06:08:55 GMT
Given my obvious indifference to endorsements, it now seems silly that I myself decide to make my own. But I don't make this endorsement to convince any of you to vote for my choice. I appreciate this community because you are all individuals capable of making such choices for yourselves. I do it to articulate the reasons why I will vote for John Edwards on March 2nd. First of, I think both candidates are electable. Both John Kerry and John Edwards will have a strong chance of defeating Bush. So I can't abide by those silly "electability" arguments that have propelled Kerry to his current, commanding lead in the race.
I prefer to look beyond November. To be blunt, I want what the Republicans have -- the trifecta. I want the White House, Congress, and the Supreme Court. I want as many state houses and legislatures as we can get. I want complete dominance.
And as I look at the two remaining candidates, Edwards seems the best bet. It's the difference between Bob Dole and George W. Bush. One symbolized the GOP's past, the other the future.
I have great respect for Kerry's accomplishments, from Vietnam on through his tenure in the Senate. He has voted on the right side of the issues far more often than not. But to me, he looks, sounds, and feels like the past. His and his campaign's obvious indifference (at best) to the blogosphere just emphasized that generational gap.
I want something else. I want someone who symbolizes the future of our party. Someone whose rhetoric inspires, rather than bores. Someone who has run a positive campaign worthy of praise, rather than someone who has used slash and burn campaign tactics against members of his own party. Someone who people actually like, rather than support for some bizarre notion of "electability".
Being the eternal optimist, I assume our nominee will be the face of the Democratic Party for the next eight years. Given I want to retake both the House and the Senate by 2006, the question thus becomes, "Who do I want representing the party through 2012?" Who will give us the best chance to take back Congress from the GOP?
To me there's no question, thus my vote will be for Edwards.

I think this is a TERRIFIC piece.
