Hillary says her inaugural address will cause oil to drop to $60 or $70 a barrel
Clinton pledges to stand up to oil-rich nations

Independence, Ia.- Hillary Clinton promised this morning, in the town of Independence, that she will send a defiant message to oil-producing countries during her inaugural address, if she's elected president. Reliability is one of the new themes in Hillary Clinton's stump speech. And one of the vows she's making is to slash America's dependence on foreign oil.

"If I tell you I'll stick with you, I stick with you," she told a crowd of about 350, repeating a theme that has popped up frequently on the campaign trail this week. "If I tell you I'll fight for you, I'll fight for you."

America will be the country that leads the way toward energy independence, she said after arriving about an hour late by car after pea-soup weather prevented her from flying from Des Moines to Waterloo.

"When I stand up in my inaugural address and say to the entire world, particularly the oil-producing countries, We're not going to be taken for a ride any longer. We're going to stand up and say enough, ... when I say that, those countries will know because they follow our elections, they follow what we do in our politics as closely as we do, they'll know that I always try to do what I say."

Clinton, a U.S. senator from New York, predicted her words would cause the price of oil to suddenly drop, to $60 or $70 a barrel. Oil was $20 a barrel when President Bush took office, she said...

2. Hmm...
That would be nice, but its not the most important thing weighing on my mind in theses elections... Shoot, if we were paid for the increased costs of inflation and for the adjustment that needs to happen with oil, we'd be able to pay for it.

I guess she has it all worked out with the powers that be.

India - oil consumption up 404% 1980 - 2006
China - oil consumption up 440% 1980 - 2006

China's oil consumption by 2020 at current rates of demand growth - 18.5 million barrels a day.

Whatever, Hillary.

17. She has a point, and so do you.
Short term movements in the price of oil are fueled by increases in world tensions, short term economic uncertainties, risk of middle east oils supplies being disrupted, etc. If you accept her assertion about the type of presidency she would run (which clearly is open to debate) then it is plausible that Clinton getting sworn into office, coupled with major announcements about the types of international diplomatic initiatves she says whe will take, could have an immediate calming effect on oil commoditiy trading. Few would argue that Bush's Middle East policies haven't significantly negatively impacted the price of oil. The sharp suden upward price spikes we have seen take place in oil prices during the last year can't be pegged to ongoing industrialization in China and India.

But in the longer run, over a matter of several years to a decade, prices of Oil will continue to do climb over today's prices for the reasons you give, even with a toatal reversal of Bush's policies. The only thing that could mitigate against continuing steep rises would be massive gains in conservation and alternative fuels and energy sourses.

Sorry.

This is going to backfire on her bigtime, people do NOT like being make promises that are so obviously unable to hold water.

The majority of people expect Politicians to make odd promises, but it usually goes like these lyrics here....

"Lie to me, I promise...I'll believe"

Not "Dump a whole pile of crap on my head and call it shampoo, telling me to ignore the smell."

27. My favorite part was the use of "if". "If I tell you I'll stick with you, I stick with you."
IF not WHEN.

Somebody really needs to tell her and her speech writers that this type of sentence construction increases the perception that she's without convictions or political courage. It's such a simple thing to pledge to "stick with" regular folks. It doesn't tie her down to a specific policy or time line. Sheesh.

Look at her Christmas commercial. She is "giving" us gifts, like healthcare, universal pre-k, etc. Listen, you arrogant SOB, if and when we get these things, we earned them and we pay for them. You give us NOTHING!!!

The only way for her decisions to crater the price of oil is if she bombs the oil terminals of China, India and a few other major importers.

44. (Bill) Clinton: "We May Be At Peak Oil"
Speech: The Opportunity for Private Citizens to Effect Positive Change in an Increasingly Interdependent World
4/24/06

http://www.egovmonitor.com/node/5728

. . .

The Indians and Chinese are in this huge fight now to see who can get the most oil. We may be at a point of peak oil production. You may see $100 a barrel oil in the next two or three years, but what still is driving this globalization is the idea that is you cannot possibly get rich, stay rich and get richer; if you don’t release more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. That was true in the industrial era; it is simply factually not true. What is true is that the old energy economy is well organized, financed and connected politically.

. . .

Clinton raises alarm about oil depletion
6/22/06

http://www.energybulletin.net/17470.html

Former U.S. president Bill Clinton has urged newspaper editors to focus more attention on the depletion of the world’s oil reserves. In a June 17 speech to the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies convention in Little Rock, Arkansas, Clinton said a “significant number of petroleum geologists” have warned that the world could be nearing the peak in oil production. Clinton suggested that at current consumption rates (now more than 30 billion barrels per year, according to the International Energy Agency), the world could be out of “recoverable oil” in 35 to 50 years, elevating the risk of “resource-based wars of all kinds”.

During a question-and-answer period, the Georgia Straight asked Clinton if he believed that Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait, and United Arab Emirates had exaggerated claims about their proven oil reserves. The four Persian Gulf states are among the six nations with the greatest listed proven reserves. (Canada and Iraq are the other two.) “I don’t know if they’re overstating their reserves,” Clinton replied. He added that he expects oil prices will reach US$100 per barrel “in five years or less”.

. . .

At the AAN convention, Clinton delivered a detailed scientific explanation of some of the problems with the Ghawar oil reservoir. Clinton echoed Simmons’s claim that massive amounts of water have been injected into Ghawar to maintain oil pressure. “It implies less oil than we previously thought,” Clinton said.

Clinton also recommended that everyone at the convention read The Empty Tank: Oil, Gas, Hot Air, and the Coming Global Financial Catastrophe (Random House, 2005), by Jeremy Leggett, a petroleum geologist and international campaigner for Greenpeace. Clinton also emphasized the importance of developing the alternative-energy industry and weaning his country off its dependence on imported oil. He claimed that promoting renewable power would also stimulate the American economy.
