Poll question: Culture Group and Candidate Preference
Edited on Mon Feb-23-04 07:51 AM by HFishbine
Identify your culture group, then answer the poll question below.
----------

THE MODERNISTS

They accept the commercialized, urban-industrial world as the obvious right way to live. They focus on material progress and want their children to be better off materially than they were themselves.

Modernists see themselves as defenders of rationality, technological advance, prosperity and individual freedom against the Traditionalists, New Agers and religious mystics who resist or question material progress. They see global corporations and financial markets as powerful engines of wealth creation engaged in converting the other-wise idle resources of the planet into usable products to the ultimate benefit of all.

THE TRADITIONALISTS

They reject the materialistic values of modernism and call for a return to more traditional values. They believe in community, family, helping others, volunteering, creating and maintaining caring relationships, and working to create a society based on traditional values. They seek to build stable inter-personal relationships, often through religious congregation.

THE CULTURAL CREATIVES

They share with Modernists a receptivity to change, but reject materialism, have a cynicism of the corporate media and view the consumer/corporate culture as infected by greed. They share with traditionalists a concern for human relationships, volunteerism, and contributing to society, but reject what they see as the Traditionalists' tendencies towards survivorism and the belief in the right of humans to dominate nature.

---------------

Identify your group and your candidate (name your candidate if "other"):

4. Kucinich
My last post in this thread, so it'll sink like all Kucinich-exclusionary threads ought to do.

8. Where did you get these definitions?
Generally, definitions seem confining to me (although yours seem pretty good).

10. Good question
I'll post the answer a little later, I don't want to pollute the poll.

14. The Categories
are slightly re-worded, although mostly verbatim, from "When Corporations Rule The World" by David Korten.

According to Korten, the Modernists comprise about 48% of the population and their numbers are stable; Tradionalists about 25% and are declining in number; the Cultural Creatives about 26% and growing. He credits the CCs with forming the core of the Seattle WTO protests.
