1. The ONLY candidate I've ever met was Howard Dean a few years ago.
I liove north of Atlanta and can't drive. I got lucky back then in that I belonged to a local group of Deaniacs, and they invited me to a speech he was giving in DT Atlanta. I would LOVE to beet Biden, but very few Dems come to this areal It's Ga. after all! If thy do come, it's usually for a fund raising event and I couldn't afford to go anyway!

we were stationed at Ft. Irwin and I knew him. Howard Dean had lunch with him. Russ Feingold, Ron Wyden, Ted Kulongoski, and I told Bill Clinton once that his cousin said "Hi." Which she did.

6. Wes Clark on numerous occaisions
Edited on Sun Dec-16-07 06:10 PM by Tom Rinaldo
He is really the only one on a national level who I would claim to know at all personally. I know my Congressman a little, and I have a pretty good connection with Eric Massa who is running again in the 29th CD in NY.

Many years ago I drove Ralph Nader to speak at an anti-nuke rally. Does that count? lol

I was a student campus radical of sorts and we had a little camp out thing going and McGovern came by to see us and speak to us for a few minutes when he visited our school. I really like George.

19. something about Mc Govern few know...
As a senator from South Dakota, it was his legislation that started the food stamp program for poor and out of work people. Most think it is mainly for the so called, "poor" But I have read that millions have used this during times of unemployment, especially for certain kinds of seasonal work...It is a very worthwhile program, and instead of being sized down, should be expanded.

23. I met the current Mayor of Chicago...and he lied to me..
I was teaching at this school, a very long time ago, he was States Attorney of Cook County then, and he came by for some reason, and I talked to him a short time, asked him to help our school with some of its problems..was a typical inner city school and further, asked him to come back, and he said he would..and guess what. He never helped, and he never came back..
(not for many any years.., only after a killing took place at the school 20 years later and he was Mayor......)

14. Only a few I've actually met
Not really big names or anything... Former Rep. Jim Turner (D-TX), my U.S. Rep before Delay's re-redistricting, and Rep. Nick Lampson (D-TX) whom I interned for when he used to represent the Beaumont area; he now holds Delay's seat and is one of the 'pugs' biggest targets in the '08 Congressional races. I also met most of the Dems who ran for TX statewide races in '02; all of whom were defeated in that depressing election year.

I have attended rallies for John Kerry, John Edwards, and Barack Obama, and gotten to see them speak, but haven't actually gotten to meet them.

JK was right there, but I wanted to meet Teresa. I met Kucinich in my teeny hole in the wall town when he was still campaigning for the primary. I've been to some other rallies, but you don't get to meet many noted politicians in the places I've lived.

17. I had a few drinks with B Clinton at Wild Ginger in Seattle.
Just the two of us at the bar. I had hair almost to my waist, wearing a vintage Western shirt and some blown-out boots. He was in a suit and there were probably 150 people just staring at us. Effing hilarious. He even phoned my Mother (a hugh supporter of his).

He was there for a fundraiser for the Murray woman (Senator?).

I then ran into him a couple of days later at Pike Street Market. I borrowed a guitar from a street musician and played "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out".

Clinton then asked the street guy to show us a good place where we could drink some beers.

So the guy takes us to this little dive on the water.

The Secret Service was freaking out.

LOL
I met him when I went to the gathering of people who want to establish the Department for Peace in Washington. He was instrumental and ever present along with Marianne Williamson, Walter Kronkite and others.
He had just married Elizabeth, and I was kicking myself for not following up on my intention to propose to him...
Damn. Missed out again !

I had the fortune to meet Sen Al Gore at a campaign rally, when he was running for President in '88 and got his autograph, which I now have framed.

Also have met 4 Alabama Gov's.

And have seen, but not met, 2 Presidents in person.

I can't think of all of them right now. I've met a lot of politicians' family members: Chelsea Clinton, Teresa Heinz Kerry, Vanessa Kerry, Caroline Kennedy.

I've met several foreign politicians and heads of state as well.

30. I practically grew up on Capitol Hill, but that was a long time ago
Edited on Sun Dec-16-07 07:54 PM by DFW
I've been stationed overseas for almost 30 years now, so
the field narrows when excluding the dear departed.

Still alive:

Howard Dean (a lot)
Bill Clinton
Hillary Clinton
Al Gore
Wes Clark (almost as often as Howard)
Barack Obama
Mark Warner
Jim Webb
Chuck Robb
Nancy Pelosi
Kent Conrad
Evan Bayh
Walter Mondale
Robert Reich
Rush Holt
Brad Sherman
Stephen Breyer (OK, not a politician per se, but a guy I wildly respect)
Zbigniew Brzezinski
Richard Viguerie (not really a politician either, but how's THAT for consorting with the enemy?)
Raymond Chrétien (I still want to force him to defect and be our Secretary of State)
Otto Graf Lambsdorff (
Walter Scheel

Probably others who don't come to mind right away.

No longer with us:
Charlie Gooddell
Everett Dirksen
Jacob Javits
Hubert Humphrey
Bobby Kennedy
Sargent Shriver
Frank Church
Lyndon Johnson
Gerry Ford
Nelson Rockefeller
Pat Moynihan
Stuart Symington
Stepan Roganov (?) The Soviet embassy in D.C. refused to tell me what happened to him.
Plus a bunch of others I met before I realized that "Senator" was not a common first name among my Dad's friends.

Just for laughs, I'll bet I'm the only one here who met both Groucho Marx and Salvador Dalí LOL

34. I met him a couple of times
I worked as a page in the Senate, and so ran into him a few times there. I also played with a
band that did some big bash at Sargent Shriver's place, and met him there, too. My father and
Bobby were friends while he was in the Senate, and were on a first name basis. I used to hang
out with the gorgeous secretaries at his Senate office, but was 15 and had no chance LOL. RFK, Jr.
and I were schoolmates in Washington, D.C. and used to hang out at recess. We're talking ancient
history, now--early to mid 1960s. He now teaches at my daughter's Law School, Pace University in
White Plains, but I haven't yet connected with him there (she just started) except by phone.
