1. Sounds like their endorsement has very little to do with who becomes the candidate

2. Why a poll on objectively verifiable facts.
A quiz maybe, . . .

and I don't know the answers, but a poll on the question makes no sense.

8. It's a push poll.
It doesn't want your opinion. It wants to give you the information that forms your opinion the way it has already decided you should think.

16. It's a poll...
Not all polls are opinion-based.

Think of the polls where people were asked if Saddam was responsible for 9/11. As you can see, some people don't know who Paul Simon was. I'd bet some don't even know how Bill Bradley is.

Not everyone can be as charming and delightful as an Obama supporter.

10. So you detect the bitterness?
Don't you like the way they're treating it? Like the White House reacted to Gore's Nobel Peace Prize.

20. The point is that the Des Moines Register has never picked the winning candidate
Enjoy the endorsement!

15. Illinois Senator - wore bow ties - like Obama was known in Iowa because of border state TV
Senator Paul Simon was born November 29, 1928 and died December 9, 2003, and was a Congressman from 1975 to 1985 and a Senator from 1985 to 1997. In 1988 he was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination and considered a major candidate, even getting a Saturday Night Live co-host gig with singer Paul Simon.

17. I wonder why they didn't endorse in '92
Harkin was running that year, so you would've thought they would've endorsed the home state Senator.

19. I found this about 1992...
From the LA Times:

As pleased as the Clinton camp probably is, it must also remember that in the past 20 years no Democrat endorsed by the Register has gone on to win the party's presidential nomination. The paper chose Edwards in 2004, Bill Bradley in 2000 and Paul Simon in 1988. The Democratic caucuses were uncontested in 1992 and 1996.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2007/12/dmregister.html

Then there's this:

The nadir of the caucuses was in 1992, when Iowa Senator Tom Harkin ran for the Democratic nomination. None of the other Democratic candidates chose to compete in Iowa, which minimized its importance in the nomination process. President Bush was unopposed on the Republican side, and the media completely ignored the state.
