OH Gov Strickland "of all the Republican candidates, Mr. Huckabee would be my personal choice.

I can tell you that for a long time, I have felt the strongest Republican—certainly in Ohio—would be Mr. Huckabee. Early on, people were surprised that I would say that because he was not registering in the polls.

But I know him, I’ve met him. He’s a very likable guy. He’s been a governor. A Baptist minister. But he’s the kind of combination of conservative views in some ways, but very, almost liberal views in other ways.

He’s a very socially compassionate man who obviously has concern for the poor and the working middle class, while at the same time, having rather conservative views when it comes to a matter like abortion or gay marriage. … I think of all the Republican candidates, Mr. Huckabee would be my personal choice.

1. Love Ted Strickland, but in a world of my control he would not have
uttered that sentiment.

The more I learn about Mike Huckabee the more I think he's a silver-tongued sadist. There's a ruthlesness beneath the public speaking skills he apparently developed as a minister.

2. Perhaps Strickland is playing this very smartly.
I don't think America will elect Huckabee president. I don't assume that about McCain or Romney. Giuliani is a toss up.

3. After all that has come out on Huck, it hurts your credibility to utter an
endorsement base on him being a nice guy. I was shocked to read this.

4. Voters should make an opinion about a person based on their likeability
Being likeable does not make one a good elected official or even just a person.

Even idiots and morons can be likeable.

We had a mayoral candidate that everyone including the Democratic opponent stating he was a likeable person. But, he showed poor judgment during and after the campaign. Personally, I considered him more disgusting than likeable.

And yes, endorsements should not be based on whether a candidate is likeable or not. With the exception of people like Hitler, Saddam and others that kill to get where they get likeability should not be a factor.

10. And Huck's not even a "nice guy"--not by a long shot. It's an act.

8. No, he's not
He's had a trend of doing and saying some strange things lately. Its probably a poorly conceived strategy of trying to appeal to the cracker vote in Ohio.

9. He travelled to Iwa w Hillary. I'm sure HRC WON"T be picking Strickland as a running
mate (what are his accomplishments? I never heard of him b4 he was chosen to run in Ohio (against Blackwell). I wonder if this isn't a ploy to win confidence in the fundie/far right camp, then attempt to get it to sway it toward Hillary (I can't believe it can happen even w HRC attending those fundie prayer meetings).

7. Ok, that's just weird, Ted
I don't know what he's trying to do, but that's some weird triangulation. IMHO, Strickland was at a disadvantage of being on the Hill so many years before being elected governor that he's a little out of touch with all of Ohio and not sure of himself on the issues. Consequently he's following some very bad advice of some Ohio Dems. Its a weird little circle of influence that includes Ohio DLC'ers and, weirdly enough, some misogynist gay men who survived years of GOP control by becoming master empire builders in federally funded health and human services organizations.

That's why Strickland's positions come out so strange sometimes. He needs to reconnect with Ohio voters and mainstream Dems before he ends up hurting his administration. He's alienating women and the black community at an alarming pace. He can't keep it up for very long without seeing some problems.
