The Des Moines Register editorial board is composed of mostly women

Just keep that in mind. Women are the biggest backers of Hillary, so this is absolutely no surprise. I knew Hillary would get the endorsement when I saw it was a female only board.

38. I believe that the use of the antique terms "broad" and "spinster" is sufficient indication of jest
Edited on Sat Dec-15-07 09:54 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
And I am not at all fond of her. I intensely dislike Hillary. She's my #2 pick (or #3 some days, when she's being particularly awful) because I think she would be a decent candidate.

My support of her is exaggerated because she is perceived as being in a two person race with Senator Obama, who I dislike even more than Senator Clinton.

The only candidate I like is Joe Biden.

Women are the biggest supporters of Hillary. Just look at the polls? Why is saying that sexist? It's reality. Would you be surprised if Jet Magazine endorsed Obama? I mean, c'mon people. It's obvious.

I've been a feminist since the early 70's. Feminism means that women can think for themselves. I've thought for myself, and Hillary just doesn't meet my standards for a president...it doesn't matter what her gender is.

On that very point there were a whole lot of dense people all around the world, and a number of them are running for the Democratic nomination for President right along with Hillary now. We came damn near to electing one of those dense people to the White House instead of "W" in 2004 also.

I grant you though that it wasn't any of those folks finest moment.

86. Would VP AL Gore ever have gotten his job...
...if he weren't the son of Senator Al Gore Sr. from Tennessee? People gain enough prominence to run for different reasons. Sometimes it's because they were a Pro Wrestler or Quarterback, sometimes their Dad was a famous politician, if you start going down that road you'll end up discarding half of the people in elected office for having hitch hiked there on undeserved fame.

Do you think being the son of a popular Senator prepares one for becoming a Senator oneself more than being the actively involved life partner of a sitting President of the United States?

100. Al worked his way up and punched his ticket just like every other politician
He was first elected to the House, where he stayed for eight years, then he transitioned to the Senate, then he ran for the Democratic nom and lost and so he continued in the Senate for a few more years until he was chosen to be VP, and then, after eight years of being VP the guy finally ran for President. By that time, many people didn't even remember who his father was. Even more importantly, throughout his career he ran on his own experience and his own accomplishments in elected office; he never tried to lay claim to those of his father.

104. In Tennessee no one ever forgot who his father was.
Edited on Mon Dec-17-07 02:46 PM by Tom Rinaldo
And they certainly were aware of who he was when Al Gore Junior sought funding and support to run for Congress the first time. The media sure knew also, and Al Jr started out with a massive name recognition advantage over his opponent at the time.

Why on Earth do you think there are so many sons and daughters of successful politicians getting elected to high office in politics? Do you think it a co-incidence? You think RFK Jr.'s name hasn't been a factor in his career? Or for Andrew Cuomo who just became Attorney General of the State his father was three time Governor of? Is is a pure coincidence that Bob Casey Jr. just got elected U.S. Senator from a State where his father was a popular Governor? Why do you think Lincoln Chaffee replaced his father in the Senate from Rhode Island? Or John Sununu Jr. in New Hampshire? Do you think maybe that Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana might have gotten a boost by her father being a long time New Orleans Mayor? Or how about Alaska, do you think perhaps Senator Lisa Murkowski's dad had something to do with her being in position to have gotten elected there?

Yes Al Gore worked hard, and Al Gore succeeded because he is talented, and also in part because he was well prepared for a career in politics from his close exposure to it through his time spent with his Father. No one, at least not I, claims that Al Gore hasn't been an excellent public servant. Nor do I suggest that were he not of high caliber he could have won those races and that acclaim simply because he was his father's son. But being Al Gore Jr. was a big political asset to Al Gore Jr. when he started his career in politics.

Al Gore Jr. was a child through most of his father's career. He certainly wasn't Al Senior's life mate and closest political adviser. It would have been absurd for him to have claimed any "credit" for his father's career. Do you honestly believe that the experience that RFK Senior could lay partial claim to was all the result of his handling of the Justice Department? Do you think that the Justice Department was the branch of government that JFK naturally turned to for counsel to deal with the Cuban Missile Crisis because it was the Department that naturally had the most to do with International Relations and National Security? Or do you think just maybe JFK turned to his brother RFK at the moment of his gravest crisis because of their intimate family connection and political partnership that dated back through many years when Bobby had no political title at all behind his name?

50. Why did they endorse John McCain?
Seems to me that there are better choices.....Mitt "dreamboat" Romney....Fred "babe magnet" Thompson...or possibly Rudy 'cause he looks so stylish in dress and heels.

58. Oh oh oh oh.....get that folks.
but you can't say the reason that Obama went up in the polls in SC is because he got backing from blacks....cause if you do you are racist. See the difference....bash Hillary because she is a woman, but you can't mention Obama's race.

And the sad thing is sex and race should have absolutely nothing what so ever to do with this campaign, but Obama supporters just have to jump in with sexism don't they. Because they know that Hillary has more class to resort to racism to combat the sexism.

67. That's not fair
I am no fan and don't agree, but I thought their own reasoning for their endorsement was sound.
I would have thought that if there was a surprise, the endorsement would have gone to Biden, though. I From what I understand he has run a small town campaign. That also would have been sound reasoning IMO and I am most definitely not a Biden fan.

I think the larger influence may be that it is Vilsack's state. Both genders have a long history of trusting his judgement and policies.

There are good reasons to support all of these candidates. I hope that what we are argueing about our opinions of the relative importance of those reasons. I think our personal evaluations should be respected.

For my purposes, exactly no personal characteristics are relevant when it comes to opinions here.
Even if they are media writers\broadcasters, etc.

92. Your comment is very sexist.
I am filled with pride to vote for a woman, but I would never vote for her if I didn't agree with her position on the issues.

I whooped with joy when I was watching Edwards this morning on CBS and it was mentioned that the Register endorsed Hillary. I was sure that they would endorse either Edwards or the new "Golden Boy" of the party. Kudos for Hillary, experience DOES matter in a potential president!!!

I bet most of those are white women in their 50's and 60's. It would be nice to see an endorsement by men and women of a variety of ethnicities.

99. The Des Moines Register has been wrong on their choices since at least 1988
Edwards in 2004, Bradley in 2000, Simon in 1988. They didn't endorse in 1992 because Harkin was running in essentially an uncontested race and BIll Clinton was running for re-election in 1996.

They swing. They miss. All the best to the Clinton campaign for being chosen.

:hi:

102. "The Des Moines Register editorial board is composed of mostly women..."
...and we can only hope that a Hillary Clinton administration will follow suit and have mostly women ....

Because the "mostly men" administrations, present and past, have been generally dull, and mostly repeated failures.
