Broken Records Breaking Records

It's bad enough that the Roadblock Republicans sound like broken records -- you remember records, those funny round black things with the little grooves on them like grandma and grandpa used to have way back in the last century, they used to get scratched and they'd get stuck in one spot and just keep repeating the same thing over and over, until you finally couldn't stand it any more and you wanted to jump up and smash them into tiny little pieces?

Yeah, that's how we feel about the RR's, too. "No!" *scritch* "No!" *scritch* "No!" *scritch* "No!" AAAARGGH!!! *smash!*

But not only do they sound like broken records, the RR's keep breaking records. For example, their point-of-the-pyramid Grand Old Obstructionist himself, George W. "I never met a giant soul-sucking profit-stealing planet-raping tax-dodging offshore energy corporation I didn't like" Bush, vetoed one piece of legislation in his entire first six years in office. One. This year alone, he's already vetoed seven. Seven.

And the year's not even over yet. Considering that he's threatened to veto at least 53 more if they ever cross his desk, don't be surprised if Mr. Mission Accomplished manages to squeeze in one or two more before 2008 finally rolls around. Especially since he's not too proud to keep vetoing the same ones over and over again, like S-CHIP -- or, as they like to call it in the Oval Office, "No Child Left Insured."

And as that little widget over there on the right keeps pointing out, the Roadblock Republicans line-dancing in lockstep to El Arbusto Pequeño's off-key "Just Say No" song over on the Senate side of town are now only three filibusters short of breaking the record for obstinate bill-blocking. Three. And with a whole year still left to go.

Like that guy camping out in that big white house, the RR's in the Senate aren't afraid of doubling down, either. Yesterday, they shot down the same basic energy bill for the second time in less than a week. If that's not record-breaking obstructionism in action, I don't know what is.

Talk about knocking them out of the park. At this rate, they'll end up setting the bar so high by the time they get forced out of the game that nobody else will ever be able to beat their stats. Kind of like Barry Bonds. And we all know how *he* got to that point.

Bonds' record will always have an asterisk attached to it, of course. So will the Roadblock Republicans'. And for basically the same reasons. They're selfish, stubborn, and determined to get their own way no matter how underhanded they have to be to do it.

They may claim to be patriots, but they're just plain old partisan political hacks. They may pretend to be following in the footsteps of Nathan Hale, but they're more like a big pile of Nuthin' Hales instead.

And you can bet your old broken records they only regret that they have but one asterisk for their country.
